Child sex beast is caged for 11 years
8:00am Saturday 28th September 2013 in News
A man who repeatedly raped a vulnerable young girl, starting when she was just eight years old, has been jailed for 11 years.
Clive Shorto groomed the child before using her to ‘satisfy his perverted sexual appetite’ over a four-year period, a judge said.
And even after the 52-year-old had admitted what he had done he still tried to suggest the child had played a part in instigating it.
Rosie Collins, prosecuting, told Swindon crown court how Shorto started abusing the girl, the daughter of a family friend, when she was just eight.
At first he would molest her in his own home and then started to take her out for rides in his car.
The burly, long-haired man would take her to Blunsdon market, which was deserted when it was closed, and rape her there, giving her money afterwards.
He then started going round to the girl’s house and forcing his way in when he knew her family were out to continue the abuse.
Miss Collins said on many occasions the girl, who has learning difficulties and was too frightened to tell, tried to get away but he dragged her back. After the girl finally plucked up the courage to tell she was medically examined and found to have injuries which were consistent with her story.
When police went to arrest Shorto he replied ‘I’m sorry, I did it, I’ll learn from my mistakes,’ and added ‘It’s sick: I’m one of them now’.
In questioning, he initially admitted abusing the girl but then denied it saying she had tried to get him to carry out sex acts on her, but he resisted.
Miss Collins said as a result of the abuse the girl, now aged 14, suffers from nightmares and flashbacks as well as suicidal thoughts.
Shorto, of Primrose Close, Haydon Wick, pleaded guilty to two multi incident counts of rape between the start of 2008 and mid May last year.
Rob Ross, defending, said his client also suffered from learning difficulties and operated well below the normal level for a man of his age.
He said he realised what he had done was wrong and was expecting to receive a lengthy jail term as a result. “What is important is the work that is done both in the custodial environment and, perhaps most importantly, on his release," he said.
Passing sentence Judge Douglas Field said “Over a period of some four years, at least, you subjected her to rape.
“You were paying her sums of money and in the limited way that was open to you, in way of your abilities, you were grooming her to some extent.
“You were using her to satisfy your perverted sexual appetite.
“She has suffered both physically and psychologically. The psychological harm done to her will be very long lasting, it may be with her for the rest of her days.
“The courts are taking increasing importance to the psychological harm in the victims of sex cases, particularly young victims.
“The offending in your case is very serious and it has all the aggravating features that I have referred to.
“I am told by your counsel today that you fully accept what you have done. The reports, the probation report, suggest that you are still in denial about the extent of your wrongdoing. “It was concerning for me to hear that you are trying to place some blame on this young victim.’’ As well as jailing him he also ordered he register as a sex offender indefinitely and abide by a sexual offences prevention order on his release.
