Lorry smash led to long delays on motorway
4:30pm Tuesday 29th October 2013 in News
THIS was the scene on the M4 motorway on Monday after two lorries were involved in a crash.
The incident, which happened at 5.50am, caused traffic chaos well into the afternoon while the scene was made safe. The lorries, one carrying empty pallets and the other carrying yoghurt, collided on the M4 eastbound between junction 16, Swindon West and junction 15, Swindon East.
One lorry jack-knifed on to the hard shoulder, and the other blocked a single lane. One of the drivers was taken to hospital, and 100 litres of diesel was spilt on to the road from a leak in a fuel tank.
Two lanes of the M4 remained open, and officials from the Environment Agency stayed at the scene until 1.30pm when all three lanes were reo-pened.
Eyewitness Lloyd Anstice, of Bristol, who took the photograph above, was caught up in the chaos.
He said: “It was a bit of a mess, they were still sorting it out in the afternoon. I don’t know what the cause was, you could speculate till the cows come home.”
