Swindon's Great Western Hospital told ‘clean up your act’

Swindon Advertiser: Great Western Hospital Chief Nurse Hilary Walker Great Western Hospital Chief Nurse Hilary Walker

BOSSES of the Great Western Hospital have been told that a damning inspection report is a “wake up call.”

The report was published in December following an unannounced visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in October.

The CQC said the hospital did not meet three standards; cleanliness and infection control; staffing and assessing and monitoring the quality of its service provision. It did meet the standards of respecting and involving patients and the care and welfare of patients.

The CQC said GWH did not have enough experienced nursing staff and found cleanliness on a number of wards to be “unacceptable” with overflowing general waste bins and dust under patient beds which appeared to have been there for a number of days.

The report was discussed by Wiltshire Council’s Health Select Committee on Tuesday and GWH’s chief nurse, Hilary Walker, updated the committee on the actions it was taking to meet the standards.

Committee vice-chairman John Noeken said: “I’m glad I wasn’t on the M4 in October and had a serious accident because of all the talk of cleanliness and infection.

“There is a little catalogue of woe there. This (report) is a wake up call. There is a hell of a lot to be done.”

Ms Walker said the hospital had identified in early 2013 that it needed to recruit more nurses and had taken on 80 additional registered nurses in the last ten months, many coming from overseas. She said another 40 nurses were going to be recruited.

She said the hospital had decided it should have a ratio of one nurse to seven patients and had freed up senior sisters to provide a supervisory role on the wards.

Ms Walker told the committee, which met in Trowbridge that the cleanliness issue was “embarrassing” and said she would have expected the hospital’s own systems to identify problems.

She said they were speaking to Carillion, the hospital’s cleaning contractors, about improvements and an in-house nursing and housekeeping team was being established to do routine cleaning of medical equipment.

She said: “I think we are good at cleaning after a patient contact, but not so good at the routine weekly clean.”

This is nothing new the hospital has been filthy since it was opened, it is a culture of acceptance and the management are to blame.

Maybe if they were fired someone might just take note and know they cannot pull their massive salaries without responsibility and accountability.

I will never forget coming across a cleaner on the stairway using a shopping mall style mop and skooting the dirt down the stairs. No wonder there are infections at this hospital and there will continue to be until this problem is addressed. Bring back the Hattie Jacques style of Matron.

House perhaps it's time to pay a little more for cleaners and employ British workers who don't want a month of at Christmas. As for looking after our own health quite agree, although it's time the NHS stopped paying for vanity care, or picking up the tab for private treatment that has gone wrong.

Those that bid for government contracts should have to guarantee that ALL their front line staff have a good understanding of written and spoken English.

How can anyone be expected to follow instruction (written or verbal) if they do not understand English (and no I as a taxpayer am not willing to pay for translation). This is not about race, nationality or immigration status its purely about communicating in English.

Utter nonsense, of course.

These people are *cleaners* they will be the same staff whether they're directly employed by the NHS or by a private company.

Also, you're mad if you think that a cleaner will do a better job if they're paid £9 an hour rather than £7 an hour. They will do exactly the same job, it'd just end up costing us more.

As others have said, there's no point employing people fresh from the Third World and expecting First World standards of hygiene and cleanliness. It's not even fair to expect it of them.

Except it isn't the NHS. It is contractors.

When it was done in house it was British workers doing the cleaning. Young mums working part time, women approaching retirement age etc, etc. The hospitals were clean and there was no issue.
Now it's a job for people who will do anything as it's long hours under pressure, working for a pittance. It's not an attractive job for people anymore so unless something changes it will continue to decline.

Ahh, it was all fields back in the days when Tony Benn ran the country.

Don't kid yourself. If the work was taken 'in house', it'd be the same people doing it, they'd just be given more of our money to do the same poor job and also strike even more than they do now.

Take off those red (literally) tinted spectacles, Davey, times have changed and the country isn't still in 1977. And most of the decline can be laid squarely at the feet of your beloved Labour government.

Ignorance of the facts in an attempt to derail the topic again by making false insults to another poster.

The hospital being dirty is a relatively new thing. Despite the same old "beloved Labour government" lying insult towards me, I do actually blame Labour for this partly. It was under them in government that the cleaning was initially outsourced.
My wife was a hospital cleaner when my first child was small. She was employed directly by the NHS at PMH. So you wouldn't get "the same people doing it" at all as there were hardly any foreigners doing it then.
I'm also fully aware its not 1977. It is 2014 and our nation is declining with public services getting as bad as I can remember.

Actually yes, haven't been to a hospital for 40 years and cant remember the last time I saw a doctor and have had 1 day off work in the last 5 years. If you cant be bothered to make an effort to look after yourself why should you expect others to pay for you?

And its not about accidents or being super fit its about looking after yourself to give you best chance of a longer and healthier life, isn't it short and difficult enough already without making it harder? Freedom of choice is great, but not if you selfishly expect others to pay for your choices.

As has already been said, it is not a matter of paying cleaners more or expecting too much.

The cleaners and their managers are clearly not up to the job.

This is a hospital we are talking about where sick people are being treated in filthy conditions.

PUT A STOP TO IT NOW.

Afraid not, it's always Davey who makes some inane accusation. He then pretends he wasn't referring to me, but then trips himself up, gets in a paddy and then confirms he meant me.

If he didn't lie all the time, I'd not say anything about him manipulating the voting - which he so clearly does.
In what way is it clear?
For a start, he's admitted automatically down voting any of my posts he happens to see and, mysteriously, they are almost always voted down twice in quick succession once Davey's come back to respond to them.

He admitted in another post that he knows you can vote more than once by using certain methods and it's blatantly obvious he does just that.

Quite why he and Empty Car Park are so concerned about it, or why they take the time to bother, is completely beyond me. What difference do they think it makes to anything?

I only defend myself and have no wish to fall out with anyone. Nobody else has a problem with me despite differing views. Why is that then? Pretty clear i think.

Meanwhile, in the real world, plenty of people have conditions, ailments or other health needs that are absolutely nothing to do with how they have or haven't looked after themselves. Not everyone is the picture of perfect health and not everyone is to blame for their condition.

It's Empty Car Park and Davey Gravey's inability to ever post anything on topic that's the problem.

They whinge about everything but then come on here solely to post childish snipes at me... so of course I'll reply to highlight their inane foolishness.

It's quite clear that Empty Car Park has some very deep seated and serious issues that only a professional might be able to address. With Davey it's a bit different, I just think he's not really sure how these things work, ie, he thinks he can accuse people of things they're not doing and expect to get away with it.

The pair of them are what ruin these threads, just check any of them and you'll spot the pattern. Why they aren't banned I do not know.

SO obvious.
What a sad **** - who the hell looks at votes anyway, I didn't even notice them till you made such a fuss! What a total waste of time.

I totally agree. I can't help but wonder what people from outside Swindon must think if for some reason they end-up looking at an article here, they must think the yokels have been on the scrumpy again or something ;-)

One thing I did notice was that when Ringer disappeared a week or so ago things were suddenly very civilised, people debated and disagreed with each other without resulting to hurling insults, playground behaviour and ad hominem attacks. Yet now it seems to happening all over again but with different users.

Please, please, psychoanalyse me mister :-)

Maybe if those oh so selfish people didn't get ill or have unexpected accidents in the first place, then we would all live forever in rude health and there would be no need for hospitals at all?!!!!! I assume you're super-fit and never use the NHS?
Spot the person who's always down the hospital!
I only go once a year as I have to get my eyes checked. I wouldn't go at all, but they summon me...

There's only one.

He calls himself Ringer. A login that he gleaned from a forum that he hates.
These threads are the highlight of his life. He does nothing else.
A total nutcase

Apart from making yourself appear too dim to work out a very simple abbreviation, you have also failed to answer very basic questions by responding with your own questions (to which you hypercrically expect an answer)

Thus proving you to be
Dim
Failure
Arrogant / Ignorant

All in one little measure
