THE Royal British Legion is to launch a pop-in advice and information centre for the public in the town centre, after Swindon Council granted planning permission.
The forces charity applied for a change of use at 52 to 54 Regent Street from a shop to financial and professional services, as a part of its biggest ever nationwide transformation.
The centre, which should be open in mid to late summer, is one of 16 around the UK which are designed to bring the charity closer to the community and offer a space which people can visit for face-to-face contact.
A spokesman for the RBL said: “The Legion has committed to opening 16 new advice and information offices in city centres across the country.
“Each centre will offer a welcoming space for service personnel and veterans to get practical help and advice, and for members of the public to find out more about the wide range of services and community activities provided.”
In the application lodged with the council, James Jago, acting as agent for the RBL, said: “The space nominated for a change of use is to be a publicly accessible centre that facilitates the provision of these services.
“Currently, this service has been provided by home visits by outreach staff.
“The new facility will invite beneficiaries to the Legion premises and double as an information and advice centre to the wider public.”
The exterior is not expected to change hugely, with future applications on signage due to be made.
