YOUNGSTERS got to grips with some creepy crawlies at a special half-term storytime event.

Around 25 children, all aged seven and under, visited Royal Wootton Bassett library yesterday afternoon for a Minibeasts themed story and rhyme session.

They had fun listening to stories including the Hungry Catepillar and various bug inspired nursery rhymes before getting hands on and making their own insects in a craft session.

Carolyn Kennedy, community librarian at Royal Wootton Bassett library, said the youngsters all enjoyed the event.

She said: “The children all listened intently to the stories and nursery rhymes and we were pleased with the turnout.

“It was themed around bugs and butterflies and so we had a couple of stories by Eric Carle including the Grouchy Ladybug and the Hungry Catepillar.

Swindon Advertiser:

“The latter was read by 10-year-old Paige Collins, above, as she was attempting to get a Girl Guides badge – she was brilliant.

“Then we had the classic nursery rhymes like Incey Wincey Spider and the Worm at the Bottom of the Garden and they went down well as the children were all engaged and enjoyed singing along.

“Afterwards they got the chance to make their own caterpillars or butterflies and we have put a collage up in the library that will stay there for a while.”

The latest session was one of a series of events at the library this week, which also included a popular talk by two women who have lived in the town for 80 years.

Carolyn added: “It was really interesting as they were recalling how they used to play in the High Street because there were no cars.”

Another story and rhyme event will take place at the Borough Fields-based library this Friday for babies and toddlers from 10.30am.
