Dave was a popular member of the local non-league football scene, loved by everyone and who knew him.

"I didn't expect that at all. I came second in the Advertiser's top 100 sportspeople but to win this is amazing.

"Everyone in Swindon has supported me along the way. When I had the chance to fight for the intercontinental title I couldn't believe it.

"I won four of the last five or six rounds and finished really strong and I was nearly in tears. It was a big night for me and one I will never forget for the rest of my life."

SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

The nominees

Alun Rossiter - The Swindon Robins boss once again put his club on the national stage as he reached the Elite League play-offs before being given the Great Britain team manager's job.

Richard Ward - Known as Clippy due to his love of his clipboard, Ward led Wrag Barn Juniors to the brink of a national title and helped a host of young golfers progress.

Daryl Lipsey - Known as Mr Swindon Ice Hockey, Lipsey is widely regarded at Swindon Wildcats and still helps out with Swindon Cougars youth team.

Keith Mayo - The boxing promoter continues to promote his sport in the town and his passion and drive was key in Kelvin Young's IBO Intercontinental success.

The nominees...

Roger Reeves - Mr Swindon Town Ladies has dedicated himself to women's football in the region for two decades

Harry Scott - the lifeblood of Walcot ABC for the best part of four decades

Pat 'Ma' Lewis - Nationwide Cricket Club's tealady's spreads take up 14 hours of her weekend right through the summer. But they're the best in the county.

Mal Criddle - Wroughton FC would not be the same without the dedication of the former chairman, secretary, manager and player

PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR

The nominees...

Swindon Town Football Club - took a young squad to free spending Championship side QPR but picked up a memorable away win thanks to goals from Alex Pritchard and Nile Ranger.

Swindon Robins - The Robins were up against it when they went to King's Lynn, with Hans Andersen absent, but came away with a memorable away win as Troy Batchelor led the way.

David Howell - Having endured a slump in form which saw him plummet down the rankings, Howell put together four stunning days to win the Aldred Dunhill Links Championship.

Toby Horton - The Goatacre star smashed 205 not out for hius side's 3rd team as they beat Beckington 2nds in May.

COACH OF THE YEAR

The nominees...

Anna Mayes - guided England's netball team to a famous series victory over the Australians

Rich Farnan - trained Kelvin Young to IBO Inter-Continental supermiddleweight glory

Richard Ward - was instrumental in the successes of Wrag Barn Golf Club's junior section

Dave Turner - guided Wootton Bassett Town FC to the Hellenic Division 1 West title before his tragic death earlier this month

YOUNG TEAM OF THE YEAR

The nominees...

Wrag Barn Juniors - came within a whisker of winning the national championship before losing to Essex club Rochford Hundred by a single shot.

Walcot Amateur Boxing Club - produced a year full of titles, with brothers Jimmy and Patrick McDonagh and Jordan O'Dongoghue winning national titles.

Swindon Cricket Club - enjoyed an impressive year, with Jake Goodwin the standout youngster as he earned an academy contract at Hampshire.

Swindon Flames - produced a podium spot at the national championship in November and also supplied players to the Great Britain junior set-up.

The nominees...

Swindon Cricket Club - secured promotion back to the WEPL Glos/Wilts Division in style by claiming the Wiltshire League title

Wootton Bassett FC - promotion from Hellenic League Division 1 West was just rewards for an impressive 2012/13 campaign

North Wilts HC - clinched the Davis Wood East Central 1 title with 18 victories out of 20 matches played

Swindon Dolphin - grew their membership by 15 per cent, watched club records fall and national qualifying times achieved by so many members

YOUNG SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

The nominees...

Laura Halford - Cricklade's rhythmic gymnast secured her first British title in 2013, triumphing over clubmate Steph Sherlock in Stoke on Trent.

Jess Mendoza - The 17-year-old broke into the world's top 20 in 2013 and helped her country win team silver at the European Championship in Spain.

Katie Warren - Golf starlet Katie Warren broke the gender barrier in 2013 to become Wrag Barn's first ever female champion. Warren also won the Wiltshire Junior Open.

Jordan O'Donaghue - won the Golden Girls tournament in Sweden to start an impressive year.

SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

The nominees...

Jazz Carlin - The former Swindon Tigershark enjoyed a confidence building year as she won British titles at 400m, 800m and 1500m.

Tilly Gray - 2013 was a year full of medals for the Swindonian as she won the 200m at the Us Nationals as well as two bronzes at the British Championships.

Anne Dunham - helped Britain to team gold at the European Championship as well as an individual silver in Denmark.

Laura Collett - further enhanced her reputation in a year which began with her taking on racing legend Kauto Star. Collett suffered a big fall late in the year but bounced back to compete in the FEI Nations Cup in Netherland.

The nominees...

Patrick McDonagh - the Walcot boxer won his third national title in the Youth Ambition Championships

Jimmy McDonagh - took gold in the Three Nations Schoolboy Championships and selected for England Schoolboys

Jake Goodwin - earned himself a Hampshire Academy cricket contract and selection for the South West England side

Louis Thompson - received Wales Under 19 recognition having broken into the first team at Swindon Town

David Howell - the Swindon golfer won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Kelvin Young - the boxer became IBO Inter-Continental supermiddleweight champion
