DINERS in North Swindon and beyond could soon have a new restaurant to enjoy after a planning application was lodged by one of the UK’s biggest brewers.

Greene King has applied to build a new Farmhouse Inn on land opposite the David Lloyd Gym off Thamesdown Drive, which will offer traditional pub food and a weekend carvery.

As well as giving residents a new place to eat it will also provide a number of full and part-time jobs in the area.

The site is located off Latham Road, near the Harvester, and has yet to be developed. The brewery is hoping the restaurant will also attract A419 users.

A Greene King spokesman said: “We have submitted a planning application to build a new Farmhouse Inn at Swindon Gateway, which would bring approximately 70 full and part time jobs to the local area.

“Swindon is a great location for a Farmhouse Inn and, if given the green light, customers will enjoy great food and drink including cask ales, tasty carveries and fantastic homemade cakes, in a warm and welcoming environment, seven days a week.”

The style of pub being proposed is largely a family orientated eatery but will also offer drinks. The application will also include staff accommodation as well as a large car park.

Greene King is hoping the restaurant will help breathe life into the area, in which the development so far is described as ‘frustrated’ in the planning application.

While a Masterplan was developed for the whole site, just the Motorola site was implemented and remaining plots on the site are undeveloped.

According to the application the building itself will consist of two storeys and has been designed to incorporate a traditional farmhouse appearance.

It is hoped this design will help make the area more visually appealing.

Members of the public can offer their views on the application by visiting the council’s planning portal at www.swindon.gov.uk/planning and quote number S/14/0233
