YOUNGSTERS made some moves towards a 50-mile walking target this week in a fun fitness class.

The whole of Holy Rood Junior School joined in the fun on Wednesday to walk a Golden Mile, as part of an online initiative to encourage young people to exercise regularly.

Jan Miller, owner of a local Premier Sport franchise, visited the school and energised the children into shape, as well as taking body mass index measurements.

“The Golden Mile is an online initiative that school children pledge to walk 50 miles within a year each and they do it by building up the number of laps, so we set a course for them and the whole school had a go,” the former Nova Hreod teacher said.

“The kids were great. They really enjoyed it and they were really impressive.

“We are quite new to the area but so far in Swindon we have visited St Leonard’s, in Blunsdon, Redoaks Primary, Sevenfields, Lethbridge and Holy Rood Juniors.

“It’s a very inclusive programme and anybody can do it. The laps get recorded on the website and the youngsters get certificates when they reach 10 miles, 25 miles and then 50.”

The interactive school and class pages on the Golden Mile project’s website converts laps into miles and displays the pupil’s progress via graphs, league tables.
