PROGRESS is being made on a fun day which it is hoped will bring the North Swindon community together later this year.

Organisers have been meeting regularly to decide what shape the new event will take and it has been decided that money raised will go towards a local good cause.

Earlier this week it was announced the Wiltshire Air Ambulance had been chosen as the charity of choice.

Kate Harding, 25, secretary to the group, said: “We are delighted to be able say the Wiltshire Air Ambulance is our chosen charity.

“We had a meeting a few weeks ago and shortlisted several.

“We wanted a charity we use or see a lot in the area. The helicopter is distinctive and everyone recognises it.

“Only last Friday I saw it above my own garden. We visited the air ambulance and were given a look around the helicopter.

“What I don’t think a lot of people know is just how heavily reliant they are on public funding.

“Hopefully, using them as our charity we can raise some money and awareness of what they do.”

Preparations for the fun day are moving forward and the organisers hope to announce the location of the event next week at a public meeting.

It will take place on September 6 and everyone is being invited along to meet people in their community.

Kate said: “It’s good because everyone on the committee is from the Swindon area and has lots of connections so we have been able to put things together.

“What we are keen to do though is speak with local people.

“We want this to be an event for everyone and not about the 10 of us on the committee deciding what should happen.

“Fundamentally, it is about people in North Swindon getting together to meet other people. I don’t really know the people who live around me so this will be the perfect opportunity.

“This is why we have called it a community day, rather than a family day. Everyone is invited.”

The public meeting will take place on May 6 at the Underground, in the Orbital. The meeting will start at 7pm and anyone is welcome to go along.
