ASPIRING designers showcased their latest creations at a high-octane catwalk show worthy of any fashion house at New College.
Nearly 70 fashion and textile students demonstrated their ingenuity and creativity to put on their most ambitious production to date and unveil key pieces of their individual collections at the college’s first Fashion Week.
Inspired by ocean life, confectionery and even laser cutting, the Seams Impossible catwalk show featured original costumes and garments designed and modeled by the students, many of them taking A-Levels.
They also had the chance to display their clothing at a special art exhibition and pop-up shop, on the back of which several received commissions.
Karen Pau, fashion and textiles lecturer, supported the young designers every step of the way along with colleague Kate Gale.
“It was a whole week of events and we had guest speakers and ex-students coming in, an exhibition and pop-up shop,” said Karen.
“We had two matinees and two evening performances of the fashion show on Thursday and Friday. This year we introduced digital screens, animations and projections for the first time. It looked very professional.
“They had just two weeks to rehearse so they got a bit nervous.
“Every year it’s stressful getting everything organised and finished. But it’s very important for them to showcase their work and share it with the public. Getting up on stage is no mean feat but it builds their confidence.”
Media make-up students also stepped in to showcase their skills as did art and dance classes, who performed.
Fellow organiser Kate added: “The garments were all decorated and constructed using a wide range of techniques including screen and sublimation printing, weaving, embroidery, beadwork and embellishment.
“My students produced some exciting and eye-catching work and the show was a celebration of all they achieved this year and showcased their amazing talents. They have made me very proud.”
