PUPILS and parents were abuzz at a First World War-themed fete at Moredon Primary and Nursery School.

The school’s annual summer fair on Friday had a military makeover to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war. Union Jack bunting lined the school gates in memory of soldiers lost in the war, while in the classrooms children were hard at work making cardboard models of period aircraft, while others tried out the assault course on the field.

The school hall and play area were packed with entertainment including a bouncy castle, a World Cup-themed football tournament and a tombola with special prizes. Tasty treats from the bakery sale and barbecue were enjoyed in the sun, despite rain earlier in the day.

Organiser Ida Coombs, community tutor at the school, said: “All the parents have come out to support us despite the weather. The parents and staff have been great. Everyone has really pulled together to make it a success.”

The children have been learning about the Great War in the classroom this term.

Ida said: “Years five and six have been making commemorative cardboard crosses for Wiltshire’s fallen soldiers. Wiltshire Soldiers organisation allocated the name of a soldier who fought in the war to every child for them to write a message on their cross.”

Ida said it was important for the children to learn about their past.

“If it wasn’t for the fallen soldiers we would not have our freedom,” she said.

Sarah Mann, who has three children at the school, said: “It’s been brilliant. There’s lots to do and lots to see. The kids have been enjoying themselves – they’ll be back on the bouncy castle soon.”

The school’s tuckshop has been raising money every Wednesday and Friday in aid of the commemoration. Fete takings will fund extra-curricular activities.
