THE latest road closure in Swindon started yesterday morning, bringing further misery for motorists.

Network Rail closed the Stratton Green Bridge as the electrification of the Great Western Line moved into the town.

The bridge is expected to be closed until April and yesterday the closure led to more queues during rush hour, with much of the A419 at a standstill.

The closure exacerbates problems created by other major works across the town.

Work has begun on the Bruce Street Bridges Roundabout, which aims to improve traffic flow in the long-run, while a lane on Marlborough Road is also shut to motorists.

Drivers have vented their anger at the problems, while council chiefs have said they are looking at ways of easing the problems, such as opening bus gates.

However, Network Rail has said the closure is vital and will bring economic prosperity to the area when it is completed.

Yesterday, a spokesman said: “While we understand the concerns of the local community, the closure of this bridge is necessary in order to prepare it for electrification and the benefits this will bring.

“These benefits include reduced journey times and train services that are more comfortable, smoother and quieter for passengers and people living near the railway.”
