A DEDICATED and caring teaching assistant has retired after 38 years’ service at the same Swindon primary school.

Audrey Tilling, of South East Swindon, was given a warm send off by staff and pupils at Ashbury Primary School last Wednesday.

Marcia Northeast, head teacher at Ashbury, said: “Audrey has been at the school for 38 years and in that time she has taken on a lot of roles, from lunchtime supervisor to teaching assistant.

“It was very sad to see her go. She was a dedicated member of the school team for so many years, certainly going through a fair few head teachers.

“The school motto is ‘We care’ and that is Audrey all over. She cares about everyone. You simply could not wish for a more dedicated and caring member of staff.”

On Wednesday, staff and pupils presented an emotional Audrey with a variety of gifts including a diamante vase, a personalised bottle of champagne, gardening vouchers and a framed picture of the school’s annual photograph, plus a handmade card from all the children.

They even invited back former members of staff who formed a choir and sang a reworded version of ‘When You’re Smiling’, calling it ‘Audrey’s Leaving’.

Audrey, who lives with husband Rod, said: “I’ve had 38 enjoyable years working with some wonderful staff and amazing children and seeing them go from strength to strength in their education was very rewarding.

“I was overwhelmed by all the generosity on my final day and I am very sad to leave.

“It’s been hard work but I enjoyed every minute of it and now I’ve finally joined the retirement club.”

Audrey, whose children Jane and Richard went to the school when they were kids, started as a lunchtime supervisor almost 40 years ago before later becoming a classroom assistant.

In November, she and Rod will have been married for 45 years and she’s thrilled at the prospect of being able to spend more time with him.

“As much as I enjoyed my job I felt I needed to spend more time with my family and my husband.

“We have a large garden and we’re growing a lot of produce at the moment, so there’ll be plenty to keep my busy.”
