JUSTIN Tomlinson is calling on the people of Swindon to harness their Olympic spirit for the country’s biggest ever sports day this weekend.

As well as being the MP for North Swindon, Justin is also the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Sport.

He is calling on sports clubs across the town to join him in supporting 'I Am Team GB' on Saturday.

The event is the brainchild of ITV and The National Lottery, working with the British Olympic Association, UK Sport and supported by Join In, the London 2012 volunteer legacy charity.

The day will see thousands of sports clubs across the UK open their doors and in an unprecedented move, ITV, STV and UTV will switch off their channels for an hour to inspire the nation to take part in a wide range of sports, free of charge.

It is hoped that sports clubs and activity groups will take the opportunity to welcome new members and supporters – including some inspired by recent sporting exploits such as the double silver medal success of our own Jazz Carlin.

Justin said: “After the huge success of Team GB in Rio, we are yet again seeing the fantastic power of sport.

“Sport has amazing potential - whether it’s disability sport, as portrayed heroically by our utterly inspiring team of Paralympians or delivering sport to disadvantaged backgrounds, so that youngsters stay out of trouble.

“Or whether it is simply promoting a range of skills including teamwork, competitiveness and motivation, as well as general health and well-being – both mentally and physically.

“The power of sport is huge."
