POLICE have fired a warning to would-be football hooligans as they step up their presence at the County Ground this weekend.

An increased police presence will be out in force in the town centre as Town face Bristol Rovers tomorrow at 1.30pm.

To avoid tension spilling out from the pitch onto the streets Wiltshire Police officers will be seen in and around the County Ground to prevent any disorder.

Supt Gavin Williams, Wiltshire Police's match commander, said: "We are thoroughly prepared for this match in partnership with Swindon Town Football Club. In support of the Football Club staff, a dedicated policing operation will be in place in the area surrounding the club and town centre.

"We do have plans in place to make sure that there will be minimal disruption to the people of Swindon and the majority of fans who just want to go and watch the game.

"However, the message to anyone going to the match wanting to cause trouble is this: we will deal with any anti-social or disorderly behaviour with an appropriate, swift and robust response."

In March, there were scenes of disorder as Millwall fans clashed with Town supporters.

As fans filed out of the County Ground, an overwhelming police presence, including Metropolitan officers specially drafted in for the operation, formed a protective line between Swindon Town and Millwall fans.

Police dogs were also brought in with multiple police vans could be seen circling the Broadgreen and town centre areas in the aftermath of the match.

Baying crowds were kept separated before Millwall supporters were escorted to the train station.

And Wiltshire Police confirmed three arrests were made during the evening, all for low level offences.

Town pubs, including the Merlin in Drove Road displayed signs saying “Only Home fans welcome.”

A Broadgreen resident and football fan, who did not wish to be named said at the time:

“We had expected the worst. It was terrifying outside. It’s a shame some fans have to spoil it for the rest of us. It’s a football match not a school playground.”
