DRIVERS look set to face more disruption in the coming days as lanes remain closed on and around the Bruce Street Bridges junction.

Contractors were sent in on Monday after the surface of the road was found to be collapsing - two lanes were closed off on Great Western Way heading from B&Q as well as a lane on the roundabout itself.

Drivers hoping to see the problem resolved were met with more traffic and delays on Tuesday morning as commuters contended with the icy conditions as well as the lane closures.

Throughout the day, contractors could be seen examining what appeared to be a sizeable hole with a large amount of water leaking out from it.

Local business owners looked on in despair as they saw traffic begin to back up again, even well after the end of the rush hour, bringing back memories of the chaos seen in the area last year.

The evening experience was not much better, with Thamesdown Transport reporting delays of up to 55 minutes in the area.

There have been calls for the council to take interim measures to alleviate some of the traffic pressure by opening up the bus gates around the outlet and allowing cars to use those stretches of road as diversions.

A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council said: “Investigations are continuing as to the cause of the deterioration of the carriageway at Bruce Street Bridges.

“A contractor acting on behalf of the council has identified some utilities underneath the road which may have caused the problems, although these are unconnected to the recent upgrade of the junction.

“The carriageway cannot be repaired until SSE are on site to help support the investigation.

“Drivers are advised to avoid Bruce Street Bridges during this time and to seek alternative routes.”

Meanwhile Thamesdown Transport cancelled several services after tweeting that some were running up to 40 minutes late because of traffic delays.
