STRATTON St Margaret Parish Council is encouraging parishioners to put their heads together and come up with a new name for Upper Stratton Library.

But they have vowed there will not be a repeat of the Boaty McBoatFace incident.

The parish council recently took over the running of the Beechcroft Road library and vowed to turn it into a thriving community hub.

A spokesman from the parish council said: “As you know, we’ve been given permission to take over the running of the library for 12 months. In that time we’ll work hard to try and make it a profitable community hub and keep running it forever.

"As this will be a place for everyone – the community, local businesses and any non-parish visitors – we would like people to name it. The winning name will be announced Friday, September 1, ready for the opening on September 5.

“And no, we can’t call it Boaty McBoatface.”

The naming contest comes after the Natural Environment Research Council, based at Polaris House in the town centre, made headlines around the world after their competition to name their new polar research ship was hi-jacked by a former BBC employee who tabled the name of Boaty McBoatFace.

Despite being the run-away success of the competition, the vessel was named in honour of Sir David Attenborough.
