THE Nick Martin scandal has brought Swindon publicity of a kind it could do without.

The town's outgoing mayor confirmed his resignation today after an enquiry by the standards committee found he had made a derogatory comment in a meeting, saying: “Are we still letting those Mongols have sex with each other?”

The story has now made headlines across the globe.

In Australia, for example, readers of the Perth Now news website were greeted by the headline: “Nick Martin, mayor of UK town of Swindon, calls disabled people ‘mongols’, questions their right to sex life.”

Perth Now is one of several Australian sites to carry the story, which was also picked up in New Zealand and by many online news outlets.

Huffington Post wrote: “The Conservative mayor of Swindon has resigned after he called disabled people ‘Mongols’ and questioned whether they should be allowed to have sex.”

Closer to home, the story made the front page of the BBC’s and ITV’s national news sites.

The BBC headlined its version: “Swindon mayor resigns over disability comment.” ITV opted for: “Mayor forced to apologise for 'mongols' remark says he was just trying to understand disabled sex lives.”

The Independent’s site ran a story headlined: “Swindon mayor says sorry for calling disabled people ‘mongols’ – but charities dismiss forced apology.”

The story quoted Richard Hawkes, chief executive of disability charity Scope, as saying: “Of course he should apologise for using this offensive term. But this isn’t just about political correctness and using the wrong words “Disturbingly, he has insinuated that there is something wrong with disabled people having sex with each other.”

Unwanted for who? The Swindon Advertiser?

This makes it sound like Swindon Advertiser support his comment.

Even if he did not mean it how it came out, news outlets are only doing their job.

It is strange how far away it is being reported, but at least the headlines shown above aren't exaggerated as much as is the norm for some tabloids.

The disgraceful Swindon Labour Councillors deliberately targeted the Conservative party and unfortunately the incumbent Mayor gave them the ammunition they used with unceasing determination for political point scoring which has belittled Swindon in the eyes of the world.

Well done Swindon Labour Councillors you must all be so very proud - this had absolutely nothing to do with the use of the term he used it was all down to local nobodies elected for representing the people of Swindon playing party politics with the result that Swindon's name is now being ridiculed around the world.

Labour Councillors won this battle against one individual but the sole loser was Swindon.

I didn't read it in that way at all. What it reads like to me is that the Swindon Advertiser, as represented by Barrie Hudson, believes that Councillor Martin has brought shame and embarrassment not just on himself, but on the town he was supposed to represent. Which he has.

Still stuck in the 1970s are we? What Mr Hawkes rightly pointed out was that Mr Martin used an offensive term (fittingly from someone whose own charity changed its name from the Spastics Society some 30 years ago).

It doesn't seem like a party political issue to me, incidentally. There seem to be many conservatives here and elsewhere who find Mr Martin's original comments, his subsequent refusal to apologise for them, and his needless and embarrassing refusal to stand-down, just as unsavoury as I do.

He should stand down as a councillor now too.

An interesting defence.....just at the point a disabled person was in the room, the former Mayor made a throwaway comment about population control in the Eurasian steppes.

The coincidence stretches belief a bit......it's not a defence I would put to a jury

This has little to do with the word 'mongols'. It was the arrogant way in which he defended himself when he could have admitted his mistake and said sorry.

I don't think he has brought shame on Swindon. He brought shame on himself.

This is a proud day for Swindon as it shows that local people don't want this ar53h0le as mayor.

You suspect wrong.....actually I'm a bit of a floating voter, preferring to choose the best candidate, rather than the colour of the rosette....so really, my vote is up for grabs for anyone, with the exception of the Liberals and the BNP, as I couldn't live with myself if I voted for whores or nazis.

The point is, the ONLY people who appear to be making this a political issue are the Tories, including some posters who may or may not be Tory Councillors, but lack the courage of their convictions, and hide beneath the cloak of anonymity.

If you want to engage in argument and debate, then I'm happy to play - but I believe in straight talk, and if you act like c*ck by just spouting I'll informed opinion and presenting it as fact, then frankly you deserve abuse. If you can't pay me the courtesy of even trying to put a cogent argument together, then why should I waste my time trying to put a rational alternative view forward.

I stand by my last comment - you posted the same tripe a number of times. It was boring to me, and I suspect to other readers. Cutting and pasting is not healthy debate.

El alcalde did rather more than just that, sadly.

I wish people n this site (you know who you are) would stop making this a party political issue. This has nothing to do with party politics and everything to do with the outdated, boorish, remarks made by our Mayor and then denied by that self same fool. He obviously has no shame as it is not the first time he has been dragged up in front of the cross party standards committee. I'm glad that the bigot has gone from his role as mayor of our borough, however I am sad that he has not had the decency to resign from the council, as I believe he will eventually say something further to embarrass himself and his colleagues. He does have form!

Wonderful healthy debate - not sure that Whores & Nazis fit in such a debate though - You should resign for using such old fashioned language - The Mayor had to !
You still don't get it do you.....as a private citizen, as opposed to an elected representative I can say whatever I want. I'm not representing anyone, my views are entirely my own, and you can agree or disagree, it's largely irrelevant. As a councillor, and especially as Mayor there is an obligation to represent the whole of your electorate. If they don't want that onerous responsibility, then don't seek an elected position, and don't take the allowances. Rumour has it that a number of Councillors post on here, using pseudonyms - if that is true, they are cowards, and I would argue also deliberately misleading the public and potentially breaking a whole raft of probity rules. Alternatively, they could be honest about their identity and use this as a wonderful medium to engage with the public.

Moving on to the language, the Mayor didn't use old fashioned language, he used grossly offensive language, to people who have no choice over what they are. It is morally wrong to be offensive because of the way people are born - on the basis of gender, disability, race, orientation etc.

On the other hand, I see no reason not to use robust language when people choose to do or be something, for example a Liberal or a nazi. Let's also be quite frank, the Liberals locally and nationally sold out their supposed principles to get a sniff of power - what does that make them if not whores?
And as for the BNP, are you really going to argue that they are not nazis?

If posters on here express views that expose them as numpties, it would be churlish to not take the shot at an open goal

Well done Swindon Labour Councillors you must all be so very proud - this had absolutely nothing to do with the use of the term he used it was all down to local nobodies elected for representing the people of Swindon playing party politics with the result that Swindon's name is now being ridiculed around the world. Labour Councillors won this battle against one individual but the sole loser was Swindon.[/p]
I have this sense of Deja vu, as this same ranty post seems to be plastered all over the Adver. So you've learned how to cut and paste...very clever, now bugger off you are boring me.[/p]
I suspect you are a faithful Labour supporter judging from your inability to engage in healthy debate without reverting to abuse tut tut[/p]
Now let's try and play nice and get our relationship back on track xx[/p]
Wonderful healthy debate - not sure that Whores & Nazis fit in such a debate though - You should resign for using such old fashioned language - The Mayor had to ![/p]
