Protesters have called for Nick Martin to resign as councillor

AROUND 30 people have crowded outside the Civic Offices in the town centre to protest that former Mayor Nick Martin resign from his post as councillor.

Members of the Swindon People’s Assembly and representatives from all political parties joined the crowd following the news that Coun Martin (Con, Shaw) would step down from mayoral office in the wake of the scandal over derogatory remarks about people with disabilities.

Sean Wilson, one of the protestors who turned out, said: “We were planning to protest for the mayor to resign but after he resigned we thought we would protest for him to resign as councillor as well.”

Coun Martin resigned this morning after intense pressure after he was asked to apologise for remarks he made at a meeting last year following a standards committee investigation.

In the meeting overheard by several other councillors, he said: “Are we still letting those Mongols have sex with each other?”

I really do hope the general opinions expressed here are not representative of all the decent people of Swindon - Any thinking person will know this has all been brought about by imbittered individuals hiding behind the masquerade of Labour Councillors attempting to bring down the Conservative hierarchy - It has absolutely nothing to do what comments the Mayor made.

This has now become a Witch hunt orchestrated by certain Labour councillors and Minority individuals intent on political point scoring - but they cannot comprehend the damage being caused to the reputation of Swindon which is already in the gutter.

By the way I have absolutely no political allegiance to any party believing that most (but not all) so called local politicians are fanatical towards their own political party and self importance - Just look at the current state of this Town.

I feel that any thinking person would see through all the political **** and agree that this man is not fit to represent Swindon or his ward in any shape or form and if had been half a man he would have stepped down from both ages ago. If he was a real man he wouldn't have such views but clearly get isn't.

Like the previous poster I gave no political motives and think they are all arrogant self serving snouts in the trough and the state of the town and the council debt and useless council staff prove it.

To be perfectly honest, other than the Labour Councillors its all the hardworking honest folk Councillor Nick Martin has crossed on his way up to Mayoral Office has decided it a fair time to air their voice as he's on the way down. Pure and simple a Bully! Not only is he a local fool but a national fool too who will always have his comments and cavalier attitude haunt him. No further training other than this experience could make him rethink his lies and inappropriate comments. Hopefully he will be ditched shortly! (i am ashamed to admit it but i voted for this clown!)

Aaaahhhh timmy, timmy, timmy - I thought after our last exchange of posts, you were actually coming round to a more reasonable way of thinking.

Why do you have a problem with people being held accountable for their comments? You hark back to the 70's when casual racism, sexism, and discrimination against the disabled was accepted ( it was never acceptable, but society wouldn't let people speak out against it), do you also want to go back to the domestic violence, and wide scale kiddy-fiddling that was also prevalent in the 70s?

Interestingly the supportive comments are clearly sniping from an anti-Labour position. Martin denied using the term, the ConDem alliance in the chamber colluded to try to kick the complaints, note the plural, into the long grass, with only Pajak showing open support, stating that 'whilst (he) didn't hear the remarks, they were made in a private meeting, not open to the public, and therefore this was alright. Now Martin apologises, and resigns, for saying something he denied. Renard must now withdraw the Tory whip from him as he is not just a liability for Swindon but whilst he stays inside the Tory tent the rest of them will be tainted by association.

So when did dynastic politics raise it's ugly head in Swindon local politics? Are the Martin's Swindons answer to the Clintons?

And the parties wonder why people are disengaged and sick of the whole system. I'm sure Mrs Martin is a capable lady, but are the local Tories so starved of candidates that they couldn't spread their candidates round a bit, or is it good old school nepotism, pure and simple?

Raises an interesting question re expenses if she is elected...the allowances are supposed to cover travel, telephone etc...I can't see how the costs possibly double, so will they claim double expenses? A good question for the voters of Shaw to ask on the doorstep I reckon.
