THE Swindon branch of the MS (multiple sclerosis_ Society is looking for a local person to take on a vital role – the chair.
The branch helps people by providing a listening ear, offering information, running coffee mornings, trips and a wheelchair exercise class.
Alan Tarrant, 55, has been chair for three years but has MS himself. His condition has progressed and that is one reason he is standing down.
He said: “When I became chair the branch was in special measures and we were haemorrhaging money.
“We’ve now turned that around with a healthy committee and money in the bank.”
Alan has helped to launch a partnership with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, which means people affected by MS will get information on issues such as benefit changes.
“We need someone who’s a good speaker, who’s patient, diplomatic and willing to talk to all people,” said Alan.
“They’ve got to be able to empower people and it would be beneficial if they knew something about MS. Ideally, they’d be able to commit between five and eight hours a week and have a car.”
