WHEELIE good fun was on offer to people of all ages yesterday as part of Wharf Green’s summer sports programme.

Visitors to the town centre could get their skates on with Wiltshire Roller Derby and learn more about the scooter and skateboarding sessions which ATBShop SkateWarehouse offers.

The sports programme, running until Saturday, August 2, is being held to coincide with the Commonwealth Games taking place in Scotland.

Activities include football, rugby, netball and American football, with clubs from across the town hosting the sessions.

Yesterday, youngsters had fun in the sun on scooters and skateboards under the guidance of Damian Pickett, from ATBShop, based at Hawksworth Trading Estate.

Damian said: “It has been a really great day as this has been an opportunity for us to get out and meet the public and show them what we are all about.

“Some of the kids have brought their own scooters but we’ve got them out on the proper kit which we have at the centre. They seemed to really enjoy themselves which is great.

“We have our indoor skate park which gets really busy on weekends but given the summer holidays are here hopefully some of these kids might come down during the time-off in the week and improve their skills.

“I think this whole programme is fantastic as there are so many sports taking place and hopefully Swindon’s young people will be inspired by those taking part in the Commonwealth Games and get active.”

The programme has been organised by Swindon Council, Swindon Sports Forum and inSwindon and aims to get people of all ages engaged in sport.

Michelle McKenny, captain of Wiltshire Roller Derby’s women’s team, said the Wharf Green event was a good opportunity to raise the profile of their group.

She said: “We are for over 18s and have teams for men and women.

“It is great to get out and speak to people who might be interested in joining us.”

Today between 11am and 3pm Swindon Shock Basketball Club will be running basketball and wheelchair basketball workshops. Tomorrow, North Wilts and Swindon Hockey Club will also be running sessions.
