BICYCLE charity Sustrans is urging everyone to get on their bikes and take part in a festive ride around Lydiard Park.

On Sunday, December 14 hundreds are expected to turn out dressed in Father Christmas and reindeer costumes to pedal their way through the park to mark the start of the festive season.

Adults taking part will receive their own Santa suit, while children will receive a pair of antlers.

From 10.30am to 1pm they will then power their way through the park and help to raise money for the National Cycle Network.

Part of the National Cycle Network winds through Swindon, and now covers 14,200 miles across the country.

But more money is needed to extend the network and make cycling an even more accessible form of transport.

Project co-ordinator Amy Martin said: “This is such a fantastic opportunity to get your kids on their bikes or scooters for some early Christmas cheer, and the gentle route around beautiful Lydiard Park is perfect for people of all ages and abilities.”

Participants will also be encouraged to bling-up their bikes with tinsel and other Christmas themed decorations and enter a competition for the best dressed bicycle and win a prize.

At the end of the ride, hot drinks, mince pies and chocolate log will be ready and waiting for the Santas and reindeers, which is included in the ticket price.

Tickets for the festive event, which should be bought in advance, cost £3 for adults and £2 for children or a family ticket is available for just £10.

The price includes Santa costumes or reindeer antlers tinsel to ‘bling’ your bike and refreshments.
