REAL ale lovers are flocking to Steam for the 30th Swindon CAMRA Beer Festival.

Festivalgoers have had the opportunity to sample ales and ciders from brewers across the country.

They come in all styles and have names such as Centurion Stout, Birdman, Beetle Juice, Bucket of Blood and Paddington.

One ale, Cerberus, is named after the three-headed dog said in ancient Greek legends to have guarded the gateway to the underworld.

Some of the ales and ciders are flavoured with extra ingredients including banana, vanilla, ginger and citrus fruits.

The first festival was held in 1983 at the Mechanics Institute in Emlyn Square, and was one of the final major community events to take place at the historic venue.

Following the building's closure not long afterwards, there were no further beer festivals in Swindon for another 11 years.

It was revived in 1994 and held for some years at New College before moving to the Territorial Army Drill Hall in Church Place and later the former Railway Museum in Faringdon Road.

It has been settled at Steam since 2006.

Saturday's session is due to run from 11am until 7pm, with admission costing £4 at the door. Pictures and report to follow online and in Monday's Adver.
