Town game postponed

Swindon Advertiser: Town game postponed Town game postponed

SWINDON Town's scheduled clash with Crawley this afternoon has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Heavy rain both last night and this morning has made the playing surface at the County Ground unplayable.

A statement released by the club via Twitter from referee Steven Rushton reads: "There is heavy water lying on the pitch and the forecast is for more rain therefore there will be no improvement in conditions. Player safety would be the main concern."

No new date for the game has been announced.

It was hard to believe the match would be on. Ridiculous that there was no earlier indication of a pitch inspection after the weather we've had in Swindon today. Not fair on our own travelling fans or on the Crawley team and supporters.

Just one of those things that happen following the Town; it wasn't the first time and I dont suppose it will be the last.
Shame about having an alcohol free night though, last night, to see the new year in.

Ridiculous day and with the weather forecast which is getting worse why was this decision not made earlier. Got to the Chalet pub and even had fans down from Weymouth to see the Town and inevitably the game is called off. Surely this decision could have been made much earlier with many fans traveling in from out of Town. Its rain rain and more rain so why on earth has this game ever been considered to be able to go ahead. Complete Joke of a waste of a day for many fans who traveled and the powers that be got this totally wrong. With money tight over the festive period I am sure more forward consideration for the fans should have been given and bet Crawley fans had traveled. At least I had a couple of beers and short journey home but feel for many others.

I blame the massive crowds at the summer concerts!!

Vera Lynn sold out to nearly 16000, whose idea was that?

On a more serious note, I was at a home match around 1970-72, when the pitch was a mudbath most winters and Town were 4-0 up {I think}, with a hat trick in about 12 minutes from Pat Terry , I think {?} and the game was abandoned after a deluge of rain That was much worse than what happened today!.

A challenge for Den and a few others like 61 or Old Stager, can you help with the gaps and the opposition please?

Andre Gray might be worth a look at Luton, a striker who is lightening fast has bagged 13 league goals already. Incidentally Benson has bagged 9 league goals with 10 in total. Still feel we should push the boat out for Paddy Madden a very talented little player. Major issue for us now is someone big up front who can hold the ball up but no one better than Ranger but we know where that is heading what a waste of talent. The way we play we need a big strong target man up front so hope there are targets.

Pat Terry had long gone by 70 72. I do remember him scoring a hatrick. First Town game I went to on 14 October 1967. Town beat the Muff 4 0 and super Don got the other goal.

I started going in the 1968/69 season as a young lad and the game I remember which was abandoned at The County Ground was a couple of years after that, I think? So I am probably wrong about Pat Terry, but I am fairly sure someone scored a very fast hat trick, before the game was abandoned.Thank you for your memories anyway.

I'd also started out but fortunately was tuned into talksport and was able to turn the boat around before reaching the CG.
These are always difficult decisions to make - if anybody saw the Luton game today on tv they'd wonder how on earth that game was played on what was a bog well before half time. However I'd agree that given it has been p!ssing down since before dawn - and still is the game must have always been in doubt. I think clubs tend to hope for the best because they've had programmes printed and staff already working, and the fee paying supporter is always the last consideration- it's about time that changed.

Yes, it was Brighton - 1977? - at this time of year, give or take a few days. Cracking game of football. I thought it was 4-0 but wouldn't bet on it. Ray McHale was running the show in midfield. The Brighton manager Alan Mullery told his players to keep getting at the ref to abandon it. A memorable headline in one of the papers: "Ref takes Brighton line and calls off slaughter". Now that really was a bad refereeing decision! We beat them 2-1 in the "replay" on a spring evening but it made no difference as we had nothing to play for and they were already promoted by then.

manc, I remember that Bournemouth game. A Tues evening I think and Pat Terry's hat trick was in the first 12 minutes.

JB, I think we must be talking about entirely different games. If my memory's not playing tricks (again!) there was no hat trick in the Brighton game and Pat Terry's hat trick v Bournemouth was at the Town End. If anyone's interested, I believe Pat is (was?) John Terry's uncle.

High JB no probs, I am sure it was 4-1 and remember second half it absolutely lashed down and the game got called off. I beleive Den was correct that Ray McHale ran the show so that may give clues to the period and I am sure a Town player was on a hat trick but very vague being so long ago. On another point you were 100% correct about Ranger who really is one evil dude and may be Town were hoping to bring him around and cash in if he did well.??

On another point you were 100% correct about Ranger who really is one evil dude and may be Town were hoping to bring him around and cash in if he did well.?? Di kanny oh

Absolutely spot on mate.

Den, DKO and Mancrobin,

Just replied to your posts and my internet crashed, so 2nd go!

Den, I think you are right and I am mixing 2 games. Ray McHale running the show in the abandoned game sounds right, he may even have scored a couple of the goals?

I still remember a very fast Pat Terry hat trick in about 12 minutes, but {Manc} I would not have been there for the 1967 game.

According to Wiki, Pat Terry died 28th March 1977, RIP

Agreed. As I posted on another topic, the fans are the last to be considered. Total and complete waste of a day for me and a lot of others. Like I said, if the pitch wasn't playable after 1300 it probably wasn't playable at 1000.

Thanks for a wasted day Town. And you wonder why fans don't show up?

Joey, I can't remember Pat Terry being part of the 69 squad, so assumed he'd gone by then. Was only talking about him to my brother over Xmas and he thought he'd played for us right at the end of his career having spent most time at Charlton.

I suppose you could have seen him in 68?

Yes it was Brighton and at the time the pitch had more sand on it than grass.

Been to a fair few games to be honest that we're called off.

Chesterfield away Friday night flood light failure.
Brentford away waterlogged pitch.
Port Vale away frozen pitch.
....to name a few and a fair few home games as well.

Sh't happen and the rain has been constant.

Lets hope there is some good news on the player front and hoping we have not seen the last of a couple of the Town players. I get the feeling we have seen the last of Pritchard though having heard his deal is done from a few in the pub. I would guess Lee Power is hard at work on replacements for Ranger and Ajose who played for Peterborough but was taken off after 59 mins with no goals. I would welcome Ajose back but feel Madden is a better player (just my view) and we may get him cheaper. Ajose wages also could be an issue even with a high fee being asked. Hate this January window as clubs come sniffing and pick up all the good players and lets hope Power at least makes them pay if they want any of our own assets. Could be that Ranger, Ajose , El Gabbas, Luke Rooney, Navaro, and possibly Pritchard will give us scope to bring in four or five at least.

Does the Referee not have to call the game off ?

I don't know what time they normally arrive but the Club may have had to wait for him to arrive. Frustrating for fans but it may not be the club's fault.

I remember the Brighton abandoned game well, as a 10 year old I assumed we would get the points until my Dad told me otherwise, I was gutted!!

McHale was awesome that day (As on many others).

Spooky this, but the abandoned game v Brighton we were discussing earlier seems to have been on January 1st 1977!!!

Town 4-0 up, abandoned after 67 minutes, after Alan Mullery pleaded with his players in his half time team talk to hassle the ref to abandon it,

Crowd 12369?

McHale incredible for Town, as others said earlier.

Replay 10th May and Town won 2-1.

But who scored the 4 goals, PLEASE??????

I watched the Luton game ont he box yesterday morning before the Swindon game and I thought if they can get thatn ours wll be on , it was a bit of a lottery though and if it had'nt been on TV I am sure it would have been called off , certain Mr Benson poached another goal for them .

Per Paul Plowman's book " Swindon Town 1879-2009" the goals were scored by Mc Hale (2), Stroud and Syrett. Incidentally we lost the away game to Brighton that season 0-4!

I was gutted by the decision to postpone, tho probably the right one .... no football at the County Ground over xmas is bad news, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms.

But here's my gripe - Radio Wiltshire!
I travel up from Winchester, and had reached the M4 before Radio Wilts announced (just after 2pm) the postponement. I had been listening from about 1:40 whilst driving, and not a mention!
Radio Wilts should have made regular announcements from just after 1pm when it was called off. Real lack of thought.

On a wider issue - Radio Wiltshire's football special programs are good listening, but it really annoys me that the program starts at 2pm, just 1 hour before kick-off.
The program should start earlier (like Radio Berkshire's), because drivers & passengers can then pick up all the interesting stuff on Town in that period 90-30 mins before kick off, when they're actually in the car!

Pat Terry had long gone by 70 72. I do remember him scoring a hatrick. First Town game I went to on 14 October 1967. Town beat the Muff 4 0 and super Don got the other goal.
Pat Terry-a true journeyman and was a London cabbie after his career finished.I think his first game for us was against Reading-who we had recently signed him from and he scored all 5 in an evening kick-off-I think my facts are correct but feel free to put me right- and at that game there was no segregation of fans.I remember being stood a few yards away of the Reading fans who set fire to their banners-that's a long way back-when the 5th went in.An old fashioned centre forward who could hang in the air and head a ball properly.Happy days

Just checked the stats and he only scored 2-my head is failing me-probably why I was never a centre forward.

bucko, I remember the Reading fans setting fire to their banner - about a quarter of the way along from the Town End on the Shrivenham Road side? I'm pretty sure you're right about the 5 goals but I don't think it was Pat Terry's debut. I believe he actually signed from Reading on the same day as playing against them in his debut, which was earlier than that 5 goal game. Yes, absolutely superb header of a ball.

According to the Plowman book referred to earlier above, Pat Terry signed for the Town in February 1967 and left for Brentford in May 1968. We lost in his debut match -1-0 against Reading at the County Ground. It was in the following season that we hammered them 5-1. It was on Tuesday the 24th October 1967. Terry scored 2, Penman 2 and Harland 1. I remember the game well standing in my usual place above the exitway at the Town End. The team, included the upcoming Don Rogers, and were free scorers - Don getting 25 in 46 games and Pat Terry16 in 42 during season 1967-8. This was really the Town's golden age for me!

It was hard to believe the match would be on. Ridiculous that there was no earlier indication of a pitch inspection. Not fair on our fans who travel long distances to home games or on the travelling Crawley team and supporters.
