SWINDON boxing promoter Keith Mayo hopes 2014 will be another knockout year for his Horseshoe Gym.

A successful 2013 culminated in Mayo’s super middleweight star Kelvin Young winning the IBO Intercontinental title.

And while Young’s victory over Alexey Ribchev at Swindon’s Oasis Leisure Centre was without doubt the pinnacle, Mayo’s stable full of boxers were busier than ever.

Mayo promoted five shows while many of his boxers such as Swindon’s Joe Beeden and Gloucester duo Andy Harris and Lewis Van Poetsch were regulars on big television shows.

Gloucester’s Harris won the vacant British Masters Bronze lightweight title while another of Mayo’s boxers, Bristol’s Danny Carter won the vacant International Masters Bronze light welterweight title.

Summing up the year, Mayo described it as the best yet since he started promoting five years ago.

“It’s been a fantastic year for the gym, the best yet,” Mayo told the Advertiser.

“Obviously Kelvin Young’s IBO title win was the highlight but I feel this year the gym has gone from strength to strength.

“Kelvin isn’t the only boxer to win a title with Andy Harris and Danny Carter also winning belts which is great for them and the gym.

“This year has also seen a lot of the major promoters in the UK call on our boxers for their shows, which just proves how far we have come this year.”

Reflecting on Young’s IBO Intercontinental success, Mayo added: “Obviously Kelvin’s success has been the highlight. It was a fantastic way to finish the year. I was made up for him, over the moon. It’s the biggest career highlight for him and for me.

“Kelvin has put in so much hard work and dedication and he thoroughly deserves what he has achieved.

“A lot of work and money goes into promoting these shows but when you achieve something like Kelvin has then it makes it all worthwhile.”

Mayo will now take time to decide on Young’s next step but is sure the former Penhill amateur boxer will return on his next Swindon show in March.

“Now is the time to start thinking about the next move for Kelvin,” added Mayo. “We will have to see what we do next for him.

“We have a show in Swindon in March and he’ll likely be in action then.

“Obviously we’ll be looking for him to defend his title at some point but that may not be in March. We’ll have to see what offers come in for him and as a promoter it’s my job to pick the right next step for him.

“We could go for an eight-rounder in March and then look at a defence after that.

“He’s been ticking over in the gym but he’s enjoyed Christmas and now it’s January he’ll be stepping it up ready for the next fight.”
