WALCOT ABC has added another national champion to their growing list after 15-year-old Jordan O’Donoghue lifted the National Schoolgirls Class 3 (56kgs) title, writes DAVE VEYSEY.
It was a slightly unusual route to glory for Jordan as Walcot chief coach Harry Scott explains; “Jordan is a talented young boxer who has consistently performed well for us over the past couple of seasons,” he said.
“Last season she beat Emma Dolan of Attleborough ABC and Berinsfield’s Niamh McGuckin, both national champions.
“These victories were only on club shows, but meant that girls probably wanted to avoid Jordan in the Championships by entering in a different weight class.
“Therefore there weren’t many entries in Jordan’s weight division.
“We hosted the Western Counties Final on our own show and Jordan boxed well to beat Chloe LePage of Weymouth on points and reach the quarter finals.
“We obviously expected further opposition in the schoolgirl championship, but no other 56kgs contenders fancied taking Jordan on, so she became national champion after just one win.
“It’s not ideal but you can only box the people put in front of you.”
O’Donoghue has already attended an England Squad Training Day and is in line for selection at future internationals.
