ON A quiet weekend in local hockey, Cirencester Ladies ran out 4-1 winners in a friendly match against Wootton Bassett.

Bassett battled hard from the start but Cirencester showed their skills with some flowing attacking moves down the middle of the pitch in the opening stages of the contest.

Despite some good saves from Tegan Buchanan in the Bassett goal, and a good defensive performance from player of the match Helen Wright, Cirencester put three neat goals away to lead 3-0. Emma Collison demonstrated her skill by pegging one back for Bassett just before half-time.

In the second half, Bassett kept up the good work in defence, and prevented the opposition breaking through apart from a lone Cirencester which brought the score to 4-1.

Bassett return to league action next week, taking on table-toppers Marlborough at home on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Bassett A drew 1-1 with BAC thanks to a goal from player of the match Helen Bott, while the B team lost out 3-2 to a strong Gloucester B team. Bassett goals came from Liberty Dewar and Rae Fairbanks North Wilts 2nds lost 3-0 against Wotton under Edge 2nds in Berkeley Division 3 while Marlbrough 2nds went down 2-1 to Old Bristolians 5ths and Chippenham 4ths beat Winscombe 3rds 3-1 in Wessex Division 3.

The area’s men’s teams return to action next week when the Davis Wood Hockey League returns.

In youth hockey, Swindon under 12 boys made the perfect start to tournament hockey by claiming five wins from five outings in their opening festival of 2014.

The youngsters scored 15 goals and conceded just one in becoming the standout side at the event.

A 1-0 victory over Cheltenham set Swindon off and running before Lansdown were defeats 2-1.

Wins against Dursley, Gloucester and Wotton completed a hugely successful day’s work.

The Swindon team comprised of Sean Anstey, Joseph Haugh, Nat O'Dwyer, James Young, Justin Villojen, Aidan Bramwell, Charlie Main and Tom Silvester.
