PREDICTIONS LEAGUE: Shrewsbury Town Results and Updates

On a day when the weather played an important role in the match, Town were able to grind out an ugly win. However it happened, the 3 points are most certainly welcome. We didn’t play well, the wind assisted free kick by Parry for Shrews brought the game back on level terms on the stroke of half time, cancelling out debutante Michael Smith’s opener. Not to fear, we will playing with the wind 2nd half, only for the conditions to improve slightly and Town had to face a whirlwind from the Shrewsbury players who were the ones blowing strong.

Somehow our defences held against the waves of attack. Just when a point apiece seemed the likely outcome, though the Shrews deserved all 3, against the run of play, that man Ranger was “Jonny on the Spot” to put the ball in the back of the net in the 89th minute. The relief was felt all round the County Ground. There was still time for more action as Smith grabbed his second of the match, after a neat lay-off from Ranger, to make it 3 for Swindon in stoppage time.

Did Shrewsbury Town deserve something from the game? Yes. Were they mugged? Yes. Did the score-line flatter Swindon? Yes. But as they say – That’s Football.

The Answers

1. Correct Score = 3-1

2. Attendance = 7,448

3. 1st Town goal scorer and time = M. Smith 30 min

4. Number of corners = 16

5. Time of last STFC sub = 62 min

FA CUP Round 4

The 4th Round of the FA cup didn’t throw too much in the way of surprises. There were no romantic giant killings. There were no goal fests over lower opposition. There were only 2 ties that need replays.

The performance of the clubs is somewhat mirrored in our own Predictions League FA Cup. One tie was drawn and will need a replay and not many lower ranking teams triumphing over higher opposition, but there are a few, more than in the actual FA Cup.

The answers to the FA Cup questions are listed below, but there is a caveat to the answers.

The results of the 2 Friday night games only counts towards questions A and E. With that in mind the answers are as follows.

Bonus FA CUP Answers

A. How many goals scored in the 16 4th Round Ties = 39

B. How many drawn ties = 1

C. The biggest score-line = 4-0

D. Predict a club from a lower division to beat higher opposition = Wigan Athletic and possibly Sheffield Utd, subject to the replay.

E. Total number of Yellow and Red cards in the 4th Round = 50/2

PREDICTIONS LEAGUE: Walsall Update

Swindon are full of surprises. I said on the questions page that I would take a 0-0 draw at the start. But I didn’t listen to my own advice. I nearly predicted a 1-1 draw, but just couldn't see them doing it so plumped for a 2-1 defeat instead.

One ugly win at the weekend, a deserved away point Tuesday. Is this the start of a revival? My heart would like to yes, we could still scrape the play-offs. My head says we’ve already blown it. Prove me wrong boys.

The Answers

1. Correct Score = 1-1

2. Attendance = 4,059

3. 1st Town goal scorer and time = M Smith 71 min

4. Number of corners = 9

5. Time of last STFC sub = 88 min

Bonus Answers

A. How many away fans = 422

B. Time of first and last booking for any team in this game = 1 booking 56 min

C. The total number of corners in L1 Tuesday = 78

D. How many points will the current bottom 4 get = Void

E. Time of first and time of the last goal scored in L1 = 9 and 94 min

Detailed results and tables to follow.

Wigan Athletic and possibly Sheffield Utd, subject to the replay.

With 14 ties pairing teams for different leagues there was all the potential of an upset here and there. The results didn’t pan out that way. The only team that ended up with a clear victory over higher opposition was the current cup holders were Wigan of the Championship conquered Crystal Palace of the Premier League

The other remaining tie where there could be an upset is Fulham v Sheffield Utd. Though the Blades will find it a little more difficult now that they have to go to Craven Cottage.

Badger58 is still there, but NewburyNick is clinging on hard to his shirt-tails. Rebel phish and CrafyPig are not far behind, 3ith Old-stager occupying the last of the hanging in there ready to pounce on any slip up. We have 2 new members of the 200up club, Rebel phish (I thank you) and Old-Stager, both whom move up one place, Rebel to 3rd, Old-stager to 5th. After being in CraftyPig’s shadow for several weeks Rebel has now opened up a 7pt gap on his nemesis.

Jgcirencester’s MotM performance propels him to 17th in the Prem, with red white going in the opposite direction to head the Championship.

Man of the Match Award
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Five posters got the score line right so it’s no surprise that they all were in with a shout of Man of the Match of the Match. There was some very good predictions on the attendances, which helped most to some much needed points.

Norfolk69er managed to run in with 10pts, and NewburyMike, 11pts. Kelliz had a very good day and at one point was a strong contender, he scored 12pts. Two past winners of the award, red-white and jgcirencester both scored 14pts.
This week’s winner, matching his previous MotM points haul is

.*.*.*.*.*. Oxon-Red 16pts .*.*.*.*.*.

his second award

Well done

There were a few that went for Ward and Hall to leave, but I think that was just wishful thinking. There were also shouts for some of the fringe players, the likes of Cox, Navarro and Benson.

Also, several people thought that Mason, Kasim and Luongo might be poached, but no.

All but 2 posters backed Fodderingham to go and to a man, everyone thought that Prichard was on his way out of the County Ground.

All survived.

Who didn’t survive was Mohamed El Gabbas. He was reseased from his contract and is at AC Arles-Avignon in France.

There were 8 who predicted this and get the final 2pts for the January bonus questions

At the time the draw for the 4th Round was made we had 1st v 2nd in the Prem. Both put in a strong performance, but as it turned out this was the only tie that ended in stalemate. Highflyers NewburyNick, Old-stager and jason900 all fell to lower ranked teams. Rebel Phish was not affected by the long trip to Oz and dispatched perth red convincingly. Similary, Oldhamred overcame the challenge mounted by Oz ashes, and enjoyed the pleasures of business class on the return flight. Mike and Sandy keep the flag flying for the Newbury clan, but the biggest upset of the round was louiscassius’ victory over an inform Norfolk69er. A hard fought match with Louis coming through with 3 late goals.

Yes, forgot to hi-lite Daz's exploits.

Still, his revelry won't last long, he's got to travel to the mighty Rebel Phish where he's likely to be tanked.

(shouldn't have said that, likely to lose now)
