NATHAN Thompson feels he has the attributes to be a regular skipper of Swindon Town later in his career after getting his first taste of captaincy during the Robins’ 1-0 home defeat to Oldham Athletic.

Thompson, who said being handed the armband at half-time following Darren Ward’s substitution brought a lump to his throat, admitted that he did not have the best game as Town were beaten by Jonathan Grounds’ 73rd-minute game.

However, the full-back thinks that given time he can become a natural leader of the club he has been a part of since the age of 10.

When asked by the Advertiser if he thought he has what it takes to be club captain in the future, he said: I’d like to think so.

“Playing alongside Wardy has brought out the communication in me. It’s something you need as a captain – to be vocal on the pitch – and one thing I always remember Alan McCormack doing when the chips were down and we weren’t playing that well, he used to drive the boys forward.

“I think I can bring that to my game. I’d like to think I’ve got some attributes to be a captain later in my career.

“It’s a very small consolation but it’s one highlight for me. I’ve come off the pitch disappointed with how I’ve played today but I won’t shirk away from it and I’ll dust myself off and get ready for Wednesday’s game.

“It’s an extremely proud moment for me to captain the club where I’ve grown up.

“When Wardy passed that to me it brought a lump to my throat, I’m just so disappointed we couldn’t bring home three points.

“I was a little bit taken aback and I wasn’t sure if I wanted it but to lead the boys back out was a really proud moment for me. I’m absolutely gutted we couldn’t get a result.

“It was a shock. I think he passed it to Ryan (Harley) and Ryan passed it to me. It’s so disappointing.

“As a captain you want to drive the boys and give that little bit of hunger to get three points and I don’t think I did that with my own personal performance today.”
