WALCOT boxer Joe Cuss celebrated his 15th birthday in style with a convincing points victory at the Willenhall ABC event in Coventry on Saturday.

The Kingsdown pupil encountered Joe Augusts from the host club in a welterweight contest where both lads were making their ring debuts.

Roared on by the partisan crowd, the home boxer stormed out of his corner to meet the Swindonian in the centre of the ring, but the Walcot boxer kept his composure and repelled his attacker with fast left jabs and heavy straight rights.

Cuss continued to dominate the opener and even inflicted a standing count on the Midlander just before the bell.

During the middle session Swindon’s Cuss continued to dominate Coventry’s Joe, using his reach advantage to score with accurate straight shots.

The Willenhall boxer absorbed the punishment and bravely tried to fight back, although few of his shots landed.

With Cuss constantly on the offensive during the final two minutes, Augusts began to tire and he did well to hear the final bell.

After three entertaining rounds the ringside judges awarded Cuss a deserved unanimous points decision.

He said afterwards: “I’m buzzing to have won my debut contest.

“I felt a bit nervous beforehand but once the bout started I felt good.

“I must thank Harry Scott and all the Walcot coaches for their hard work in the gym – I feel like I’m improving all the time.

“Now the contest is over I can have some birthday cake.”

Coach Harry Scott added: “That was an impressive performance from a young man on his debut.

“He won every round, and I am very pleased with him.”
