Cooper fury at Thompson ban and Ranger doubtful for JPT tie

Swindon Advertiser: Nile Ranger hobbles off during last night's 0-0 draw Nile Ranger hobbles off during last night's 0-0 draw

SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper was left fuming at referee Darren Sheldrake’s decision to book Nathan Thompson for “adopting an aggressive attitude” during last night’s goalless draw with Colchester United.

Thompson was shown his 10th yellow card of the campaign in the 70th minute at the County Ground, meaning the right-back will now have to serve a two-game suspension with no possibility of appeal.

Cooper was informed by Sheldrake that the defender was cautioned for his body language during an incident which saw U’s midfielder Sanchez Watt dismissed for aiming a headbutt in his direction and the Town boss was livid in his post-match press conference.

“It’s an atrocious decision,” he said. “At the time I saw and it thought ‘he hasn’t done anything’ and for the referee to tell me he’s booked him for adopting an aggressive attitude – now what is that?

“For me that’s going to punch someone or going to headbutt someone, not walking away with your hands up to protect your face. I’m going to go and see the referee, ask him to look at the DVD and explain it to me. We can’t appeal a yellow card, it’s ridiculous. It’s shocking.

“I’ve got my boots, I can play right-back, kick one or two and away we go.”

Meanwhile, Nile Ranger is now rated “doubtful” by Cooper ahead of the visit of Peterborough United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern section area final second leg on Monday night, after picking up a hamstring injury.

Ranger was forced off with the problem just before half-time last night and will be assessed by the Swindon medical staff this morning.

Cooper cut a frustrated figure at the end of the stalemate with Colchester, saying: “We dominated it from start to finish. I’ll have an argument with anyone who says we didn’t. We deserved to win but you have to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Finally, Town yesterday confirmed Miles Storey’s loan move to Shrewsbury Town – as revealed by the Advertiser, with Cooper saying: “He’s been pestering may and rightly so that he wants to play, and he’s got a fantastic opportunity to go to Shrewsbury. Let’s see how he does.”

Cooper is right when he says we dominated possession, but after we lost Ranger we were toothless up front. The game badly needed Miles with his pace to give them something to think about, The timing to send him out on loan just before the JPT return leg is an appalling decision.

Thought we did well enough just couldn't get the ball in the goal. Every trick in the book from Colchester to waste time, the ref should have brought the yellow out for the keeper when he put the ball down then kept delaying waiting for the wind to move it then resetting it. The ball can barely have been in play for 45 of the 90 mins.

Cooper moaning after the game he has no strikers for Monday well why is Storey at Shrewsbury then?? Not saying he was the answer tonight as they were camped in their own half but would be handy on Monday as I expect Posh will be more adventurous and there will be spaces to exploit..

Shame Ranger prob out for a while, and Nathan too although like Den says what about the other 9. Cooper up in arms about tonights booking I'm not sure I thought he was at risk of a booking when face to face with the idiot Watt after grabbing the ball and there was a bit of jostling before the headbutt.

Troy immense again, and Louis Thompson and Mass growing in stature game by game. Mass starting to put in some lost cause chasing a la Ferry, and it's rare for Louis to close down an opponent without getting the ball off him or forcing a mistake. Quiet night for Smith and Danny up top, Although Smith did well with back to goal in trapping ball and laying it off

Highlight for me was Murphy's defence splitting pass where he played the ball towards Stratton Bank whilst glancing at the Town End. The lad wanted the ball to feet more but there was a reluctance to pass to him when he had a defender behind. Players that good don't mind the close attention they spin and run, so hopefully they can work on that.

You just don't get it Cooper!

You asked the players to toughen up to get points, because of your failing tactics!, so it's no surprise they get booked and are now suspended.

Oh and not playing Miles frequently, more great tactics. I knew the Port Vale was just a one off. Miles skills against Villa and late winners against others prove he can do it if you just stick with him and play him every week. This is simply what Hoddle used to do, turn average players into great ones.

Well I will be the first to tell you mark we didn't deserve to win, when the keeper don't have a shot to save you don't deserve to win, a poor goalless draw was the best we could have wished for, smith struggled all night and wouldn't have had a shot if he's there till Monday night.
It was a waste trying to get the game on in awfull conditions and now we lose Nile, thommo and storey in one day
Looks like the 4-6-0 again for Monday night

Storey has never been given a chance ! The only full games he ever had we're as a winger of which he isn't !

Cooper told nguessan three weeks ago he wasn't wanted , but now he's played every game since.

Coopers on another planet then he's only the monkey with cooper as the organ grinder.

Get storey back play him up top off the shoulder of smith or ranger then see what he does. Yes he would score goals because of his pace !,

Cooper clueless

460 and no strikers - Cooper is having a laugh!
.
You could go with our normal formation
.
433 - with Kasim coming into the middle and either Tijane or Murphy up with N'Guessan and Pritchard
.
Or
.
442 - N'Guessan move up top with Barker coming in and either Tijane or Murphy come in on the wing
.
Yes losing Ranger is a blow but we went most of Nov and all Dec without him so should cope without him for a game or 2.
.
If it was seen we could afford to loan out Storey as we have 4 other strikers - you can't complain when one gets injured!
.
If he says it's now 2 - then delay loan until Tues to cover Smith being cup tied!
.
Posh lost all their forwards for the first leg and will have lots missing again - so they are in the same boat - so deal with it
.
Also didn't Walden return the other day? That's another forward - so we would still at least 3 available!!!!!

No surprise that the other game Peterborough and Walsall ended in a 0-0 draw as well. Miles Storey is not the answer and I believe will not succeed at Professional league level!

You'd have to say well done to Marcus for managing to produce a playable surface last night. But, why did the club bother? It was only a couple of games ago that they seemed to sacrifice league points for the JPT. Just doesn't seem to be any clear plan at the moment. It was always going to be a lottery in that weather. I'd have turned the sprinklers on and then recovered the pitch ready for Monday! Ranger couldn't have trained much in the week so he was going to be a risk. It was dangerous traveling last night and I wouldn't have gone even without a prior arrangement before the match was rescheduled. I couldn't rely on trains.
Great move letting Miles out on loan just before the JPT with few eligible strikers. I can see Posh playing 3 up top and battering us first half.

To be honest the weather dictated it last night i couldnt believe
It was played. Its easy to moan when your sat in your comfy chairs with a hot coffee listening to the radio to moan and groan. But the wind and rain last night was unbelievable bad enough in the stands but god knows what it was like to play in it. Have to admit when Ranger went off we lost that edge up front. Colchester came for a point time wasting bad tackles and what with the weather loosing ranger and with them going down to 10 men the draw was inevitable.

Off topic and no apologies for that. A word about the late Tom Finney.

The word 'legend' is much over-used these days but this is a man to whom the word truly applied, both as a player, a representative of his town and his country, and as a gentleman.

The best player of his era in the words of the great Bill Shankly, and he would have known.

Old Town, your post is just about on the money.
With few exceptions, most recent posters on here when discussing Miles Storey appeared in agreement that Miles Storey deserved more game time WITH SWINDON.
Again few, if any, were arguing his case to start ahead of Ranger or Smith. The argument was/is more simply that young talent, and he has it, deserves an opportunity to flourish. Last night was just such an opportunity.
The first thing my thirteen year old said when it was posted that Miles was being loaned out was, AND IF THERE'S AN INJURY TO OUR STRIKERS ?

Now within hours of announcing his loan departure we are witnessing a drawn game that Miles could have perhaps offered Town a realistic attacking option to cover an injured striker and have the chance to prove himself.
And perhaps worse, with the chance of reaching Wembley just hours away it would appear we could really do with Miles in our squad.

I am going to refrain from verbally bashing the managers decision making, but will say that his decision not to keep Miles Storey as an attacking option for our squad has been met with much derision within our household.

Ignore them most of them never actually go to the games just listen on the radio!!
They are only happy when moaning!!
Stop moaning

Thought it was a fairly good performance considering the conditions, we were easily the better team but worried by the lack of creativity and invention. Wes didn't have to make a save but we didn't really threaten their goal much either. Positives were the defence was solid, Troy was my MOM and one of Ward's better days. Also thought Luongo and Louis played quite well.

Negatives obviously Ranger's injury and Thompson's ban. I worry about us without Ranger as Smith has had a few anonymous performances since his good start and not sure about Barker. Hopefully they will come good given time, otherwise could see us sliding down the table.

I heard Mark's interview on the way home last night and I don't believe he was suggesting we don't have a striker for Monday I felt he was saying we don't have a target man type Striker. Dany should be able to play that role but hasn't really shown himself to be suited to it. I wonder if Ben Gladwin could fit in to the role, big strong lad.

Just a thought.

Storey is not good enough YET, maybe with a bit more experience he could make it but I have my doubts. Except for Villa and Coventry a few weeks ago I struggle to remember a game that he made any sort of impact in. It's also worth bearing in mind that Ranger's court case is at the end of this month, with the possibility of him going down, I'm sure it must have crossed the mind of the management to keep Storey if they thought he was good enough at the moment.

As for last night, how anyone can have a go at the the performance in those conditions is just beyond me, nearly blown to the floor as I got out of the DR.

Why do many supporters come on here and just criticise what the club do.We all want a club with lots of money and the best players but we have what we have.
Cooper is doing a good job with what he has, some of the football at times is great, sometimes its not. its our job to support.
Well if Storey is not good enough then why is he not told that or sold on? A loan is something you want back-so Mr Cooper make up your mind. The idea of a squad surely is to have a first team with adequate cover for each position should there be an injury.Ranger gets injured and then what? These sort of decisions are not in the interest of the squad, the club nor the fans and now on Monday with Ranger possibly out this Crass decision to loan out before an important cup game-well it is to the point of revenue-is ludicrous. He wants to play for Swindon-Swindon is his team-his heart is with Swindon so don't expect him to ''Set the world alight elsewhere'' He wants to do that at Swindon-and that plank that's in charge cannot see that.

Top post totally agree , cooper seems to lack man management . As far as tactics seems very strange at times . I think a experience manager would ge more out of the players .

It is because it makes the moaners feel better about themselves and gets the attention they seek.
As for Story as much as i had to say it it seems like he is not going to make it,hope i am wrong.
Storey scored some good goals but missed sitters also.
Was it Cooper's decision to move him out on loan.
Having said that now would be the time to play him.

Don't know who is moaning the most, the supporters, or Cooper. Our card tally this season has been a disgrace and Cooper should have been targeting that in team talks and training. Its not unusual for NT to get a card or come close to get a card, and he seems to enjoy riding his luck. Maybe last nights was a bit harsh, but, he has got away with plenty so far this season and how come Cooper hasn't reigned him in over it. Lets face it Colchester had a plan and stuck to it. The game should have never been played under those conditions but it was so we have to accept that and the fact our finishing is lousy, and has been for best part of the season. As goes Storey, the only way he is ever going to improve is by playing games, so bring him back and play him, he has been effective before so why not now, and at his age he should by now have the stamina for the full 90. Cooper I've stood behind you all season as have most, but stop whinging and get on with it, you are showing your naivety and lack of experience, so still backing you, but get on with it, and if you want to blame anyone, take a long hard look about how you could make the difference and step up a gear, please. If you improve so will the team, revise your methods and tactics.

Why do many supporters come on here and just criticise what the club do.We all want a club with lots of money and the best players but we have what we have.
Cooper is doing a good job with what he has, some of the football at times is great, sometimes its not. its our job to support.
For goodness sake the lads still learning his trade he is only 19 ,that's what the spurs lads are doing playing for us. Also he has been out injured on and off most of the season ,God knows why anyone would want to play for us with some of the fans we have.
Jayden i some what agree with this, not every one is going to be like Wayne Rooney at such a young age.
Clearly there are reasons why he keeps being loaned out.
Seemed to remember the same things being said about Billy Bodin, hardly come back to haunt us that one has it!

Your last sentence Cooper has just done that and we now have the right methods and tactics overall.
We are 8th,a far higher position than the majority of the posters thought we would be 31 games ago.
Being 8th after 31 games is not a fluke.

For once great post wiz. Just a shame most on here can't see it.
After the pathetic team selection against Oldham due to resting for the jpt, I thought they would have been uninterested on getting last nights game on,
But we all know after that game the jpt is more important than the league, so giving last nights game the go ahead, the Us manager must have been dancing in the dressing room after the inspection as they brought us down to there level which looked like two useless team struggling.
Yes the conditions were awfull for both teams, but it should have been called off before 6.30 due to high winds yet alone the driving, swirling rain. And also a danger to players which turned out to be correct as we will now lose one of the best forwards in this piiss poor league.

From what I've seen of Storey, he doesn't seem up to it however he may develop as a player being only 19 as someone said. Also you have to be **** special in this league if your not of a big stature as it is hustle and bustle for most of the game with most of the smaller players especially the forwards having little impact. Think Cooper doing an ok job, but he seems to delay substitutions when it just ain't working, we just couldn't break them down last night but he didn't change until 75-80 mins. Poor finishing first half good balls into box 3-4 times no one gambling. Not sure about Smith at all, don't look up to it and a big waste of 200k when we're trying to save very penny. Hope for a good result Monday night! Come on the Town!

As to Paul Benson he is consistently scoring and I think he could still do a good job for us
We need someone who can score goals.

Thank you Umpcah,

But I follow the Luton results every week and only because I enjoy Paul Benson doing so well after we treated him so badly.

Benson has formed a fairly deadly partnership with Andre Gray and they have scored over 30 goals between them this season.

Luton are 9 points clear in the Conference, with a goal difference of 45 and nailed on to get promoted to the league just below us.

I accept Luton are not quite as good as our lot though Umpcah, who cannot beat 10 men on a wet pitch? However did we manage 45 years ago when the County Ground pitch was a bog by November each year?

Totally agree Grim absolute farce getting this game on in the first place and I do not understand the clubs logic. A very important game on Monday revenue wise and the exercise has proved very costly losing our best striker and Nathan Thomson. The weather has been shocking all week so calling the game off and saving their fans traveling through shocking conditions and in some cases very unsafe conditions why on earth didn't the club bite the bullet and call it off. Ok the football considering conditions was actually very good especially first half but the whole event was a joke as shown in the gate easily a thousand down on what it should have been. To add insult to injury there is a pitch inspection at 6.55 when most people are on there way to the ground how ridiculous is that I ask. Last night stinks of desperation from the club desperate for income and very little thought for the fans themselves especially the many from surrounding areas and the away fans. Yes I support the club through thick or thin but I had to virtually drag myself to the ground last night and that was the feeling of every fan I sit by and talked to on the way home.

I was thinking the same about Gladwin big lad and puts himself about and would be fine up top I feel. Very costly game last night and we are a better team with Ranger than without as the second half clearly showed last night. Danny is no good as the striker so I would play a different game with Tigane Reis and Murphy running at there defense and Pritchard roaming. Very bad timing letting Storey leave on loan as he, Reis and Murphy would tear Peterborough apart I think.

Spot on Wiz .I keep hearing Cooper saying how they are young lads and how he is trying to teach them ,well yes but they belong to spurs would it not be better to teach our players as well. Yes I understand about some players need to go out on loan {Mark Francis and Conner } but not Story as we know on his day he can produce .and yes he may not be a starter but should be on the bench as we know he can come on and get up to pace from the off.

Just a thought.

DKO,

A lot of talk about Storey, how we should not have let him go , how he would have made a difference but IMO he would not have made any difference at all last night. My reasoning is he has to be able to use his pace and last night Colchester played very deep second half, they let us play in front of them because any ball over the top would simply have gone out for a goal kick.

Miles needs to attack the last defender from midway inside the opponents half. I said before in my post Mark was not bemoaning the lack of strikers he was talking about the lack of a target man, Miles is not that kind of player.

I thought we played the conditions well last night especially first half and possibly we should have been in front at half time, there were 2-3 delicious balls into the box which we just didn't attack well enough and one nearly resulted in an own goal. Second half we didn't shoot, we had several chances but pulled out. IMO we should have shot on sight and used the wind to our advantage. Many may have been wild but it would only have needed one to bring them out from behind the wheel to stop their wheels from going round and round !

Did you go last night Joey ?

On the subject of discipline,if Troy does not calm down i can see him being sent off in near future games, but on the flip side i still rather see us compete than not.
Quite few were worried that we were going to be a soft side, well we are not, although i would say we are not a tough side more like reckless,Louis Thompson being the exception IMO.

Quite agree with all of that, but................, there is no getting away from the fact that we have suffered with poor discipline from the start of this season. Its no good Cooper moaning now, he should have put himself in front of a few players long ago and told them to sharpen up their act. NT has often late with his tackles. Earlier on in his career you could blame it on youth and lack of experience, right now he has no excuse, he has sufficient experience to know better. Normally the better teams are those with the lesser card tally through the season, quite simply they have let their skill come to the surface. Time for some focus and reduce the card tally for back chat and dissent.

Back chat and dissent are the worst cards you cab take for the most part.
Cooper was right to be annoyed for Thompson's booking, aggressive stance, never heard anything like it.
BUT if Cooper is going moan about harsh bookings then he should also say when we get away with one, like Thompson's challenge at Peterbourgh and maybe he has but Thompson still can not stop himself.

Dave Mackay, Norman Hunter, Tony Hateley & Co would laugh at the soft stuff now attracting bookings !
