DAVE Webb has backed new Supermarine goalkeeper Sam Warrell to carve out a good career in the game after being the latest player to help solve the club’s troubles between the sticks.

The 24-year-old moved to the Webb’s Wood Stadium at the start of this month following a brief spell at Old Woodstock, replacing former loanee Conor Thompson who left the club after his contract with League Two Torquay was torn up.

Thompson had previously been drafted in following Kent Kauppinen’s sudden departure just before Christmas, but Webb is pleased by his latest acquisition.

“Sam Warrell was playing his third game for the club on Tuesday night (3-2 home defeat to Shortwood) and really didn’t do anything wrong at all,” he said. “He’s commanded his box well and made some good saves and his distribution is good because he’s talking to the players in front of him.

“We need to defend as a team, as a back five, but on Wednesday we defended as individuals and you can’t do that. You have to talk, communicate and be organised.

“Sam won’t be happy conceding three goals but none of them are down to him and I can’t say he’s done anything wrong with the goals.

“He, as a keeper, would want clean sheets and he’s not going to be happy at all with conceding three goals like we did in midweek because he didn’t do anything wrong.

“He’s been great since he came in and I see no reason why he can’t be a very good keeper for a very long time at this level.

“He’s got all the attributes we need and to have got someone in so quickly to replace the keepers who’ve left is great for us.”

Marine take on Yate Town this weekend and Webb is hopeful his players can quickly bounce back after conceding a last minute winner on Tuesday night.

“We have 18 games of football to play but one thing’s for certain, we need to improve in the final third,” he said.

“We’ve had words and we believe in everybody but it’s only them who can go out there and put things right. We can pick the team but it’s up to them.

“It won’t be easy at Yate because they’re a good side with good forwards and it’s another tough test for us.”
