WILTSHIRE LEAGUE: Southbrook turn the tide against Corsham to earn KO Final spot
5:30am Tuesday 11th March 2014 in Sport
SOUTHBROOK had to come back from a goal down at the interval to earn a spot in the Corsham Print Senior KO Cup final at the expense of Ludgershall Sports.
Having not played for eight weeks due to the wet weather, Southbrook started and were a goal behind within five minuites but, following an improved showing in the second period, Anthony Packer and substitute Matt Bennett both found the net to take their side into the final.
Manager Albert Dearing was pleased to see his players come on strong despite having not played for nearly two months and was also impressed with the impact of substitute Bennett.
“They threw the kitchen sink at us in the first 15 minutes because they knew we hadn’t played for so long, but unfortunately for them they didn’t build on that and thought we would tire,” he said.
“We got stronger and, even though we were 1-0 down at the break, we scored quickly after the break and from there controlled the rest of the game.
“Matt scored about five minutes after coming on and then we were quite comfortable and it was only us who were going to score again.
“To finish as strongly as we did makes us well happy.”
Southbrook currently sit fourth in the Wiltshire League Premier Division but have seen their title tilt hit by postponements, meaning boss Dearing is extra pleased to now have a cup final to think about.
“We’ve been challenging for the league this year but we’re slipping behind on that now because we have falled four or five games behind others because of the weather,” he said.
“Getting to the final takes the pressure off us a bit because we have something else to play for.
“It’s always nice to get into a final and have something else to play for at the end of a season.”
In Premier League action Devizes saw off Wroughton 3-0 at The Weir Field in the bottom half of the table clash.
