DEBUTANT Jack Stephens felt Swindon Town fully deserved to take a point from their trip to Bristol City this afternoon.
Stephens, signed on loan from Southampton on Thursday, impressed at the heart of the Town defence alongside Troy Archibald-Henville, as the Robins produced a stoic rearguard effort to keep City at bay despite having to play 35 minutes with 10 men following Alex Pritchard’s dismissal for violent conduct.
The 20-year-old, highly rated at St Mary’s, admitted to being nervous before kick-off but it didn’t tell as he slotted seamlessly into the Swindon back four.
After the game, Stephens told the local media: “It was a great atmosphere, a brilliant first game to be involved in, all the lads worked hard and overall I think it was a great point.
“I didn’t get too much time but sometimes that can be a good thing. Troy has helped me through this game a lot; he’s a very good player, he’s been there and done it and he helped me through the game.
“We only had Friday to get together but I thought we did really well today. We definitely rode our luck at times but the way we worked we deserved that.
“There were a few frantic moments but overall I felt they didn’t put too much pressure on us. All the lads worked really hard – not just the back four – and we definitely deserved the point.
“I was a little bit nervous before the game but I’d say I was more excited. The gaffer here said it was going to be a massive game for the club, the fans came out in force and I thought they were excellent today.
“Overall I was just excited to get out there and play.”
