A BOGEY-RIDDEN second round saw David Howell crash out of the Volvo China Open yesterday.
Howell needed to improve on a three-over-par first round of 75 to stand any chance of making the cut at Genzon Golf Club in Shenzhen but fell significantly short, as he carded a five-over-par 77 to finish on eight-over for the tournament.
All that came after an excellent start for the Broome Manor pro, who shave a shot off his score at the par-five second and the par-three third but a nightmare seven at the par-four fifth kick-started a miserable run of seven dropped shots in seven holes for the Swindonian.
Howell bogeyed eight, nine, 10 and 11, leaving him with a mammoth task after completing the turn.
While he did enjoy some respite with a birdie two on the par-three 13th, that was cancelled out by a bogey on 16.
The seventeenth was birdied but by now Howell was substantially below the cut line and a dropped shot on the final hole did him no favours, either.
Frenchman Alexander Levy led the field after two rounds, with a score of 14-under-par. Spaniard Adrian Otaegui was four shots behind on 10-under, while his fellow countryman Alvaro Quiros was close behind on nine-under.
Howell’s attentions will now turn to The Championship at Laguna National in Singapore, which begins on Thursday.
