SAM Collier toasted the decision to remain in charge at Shrivenham next season with a 5-0 thrashing of a full strength Binfield.

The player-manager took over the reins following the sudden and tragic passing of Dave Turner in February and after speaking with chairman Robb Forty, Collier has agreed to continue in the job.

And having brought the curtain down of a difficult Hellenic League Premier Division campaign in stunning fashion, the Shrivvy chief can now relax for a few weeks.

“I’m off to Thailand on Monday, I can’t wait,” Collier said. “My wife has banned my phone coming on holiday and I’m not allowed to think about football.

“It has been a difficult season and everyone at the club has stuck together.

“I spoke with the chairman before the game against Binfield and I’m going to stay on in charge next season and I want all the players back too.”

One player Collier will be desperate to stay at Barrington Park will be striker Josh Fowler after he bagged four goals in the Binfield, the player-boss added the fifth from the spot.

“If you can keep that quiet (that Fowler scored four) I’d be grateful,” Collier joked.

“To win 5-0 against a Binfield side who were at full strength was a magnificent achievement - to be honest it could have been seven.

“It was only 1-0 at half-time, but we tore them apart in the second-half we absolutely battered them.

“People will look at the result and will think that Binfield were missing a few - they weren’t they were at full strength.”

Having struggled at the start of his tenure, Collier and his players managed to turn the campaign around with seven victories in 10 matches.

“The lads are disappointed that the season is over,” Collier said. “After the game when the players walked into the club house the committee gave them a round of applause.

“On Thursday night we played Cheltenham Saracens and we were poor even though we won.

“To get this win, and in the way that we did, is a great way to finish what has been a tough, tough season.”
