TWO old faces, Claire Waite and Martin Sell, have returned to Ogbourne Downs, albeit on a part-time basis.

Former Ogbourne junior star Waite boasts a glittering amateur record having represented England and Great Britain before turning professional in 1985 where she achieved several top 10 finishes on the Women’s European Tour.

Waite will now spend a couple of days a week teaching at Ogbourne while current professional Sell - a former junior at the club - will work part-time in the pro-shop to help fund his Jamega Tour campaign.

Edwards is delighted to welcome both Waite and Sell back to club, adding: “It’s great to have Claire and Martin back at the club. Their CV’s speak for themselves in what they have achieved. For our younger members looking up to those two is fantastic.”

Waite is enjoying her return to the club and hopes her involvement could inspire more women to take up golf.

“It’s lovely to be back, I’m really enjoying it,” she said. “It’s nice to see some of the old faces I remember from when I was a kid and it’s nice to have the association with the club again.

“I’ve been coaching for 25 years but I haven’t been around the club in the last 10 or 15 years I suppose. The course hasn’t changed much but it is fab and in really good condition.

“I don’t think we have many girls here but we have a few good boys so it would be nice to get more girls playing. I think there is generally a lack of girls playing so that would be quite nice to see.”

Sell is also pleased to be in and around the club again and admitted the extra income from the pro shop can only help him reach his aspiration to gain a place on the European Tour.

“After playing the main tour (Challenge Tour) last year and the finances involved in that I needed something to help me through the winter,” said Sell. “I’ve known the professional here from when he used to play a bit and he kindly offered me a role in the pro shop a couple of days a week.

“Last year I just got involved in the wrong people, made a couple of bad decisions off the course with management groups and stuff which eneded up costing me a bit of money.

“It gives me another way of funding my golf for this year. I’ve made a good start (to the Jamega Tour season) and it is definitely a confidence booster. Ultimately though it doesn’t really mean anything because it is all about Q-school and getting in the top 25 to get on the European Tour. It’s about peaking at the right time but what it does do is maybe breed success and gets me used to being in contention and winning things.”
