Turnbull deal close

Jordan Turnbull

SWINDON Town are hoping to have Jordan Turnbull amongst their ranks for the weekend friendly clash with Aston Villa, even if the paperwork for a loan deal is not quite complete.

Turnbull, the young Southampton defender, has been one of Town manager Mark Cooper’s four main transfer targets this summer and joined the club on “work experience” on Tuesday, starting against Leeds United at the County Ground.

Cooper is now confident of tying down the 19-year-old to a season-long stay in Wiltshire and has high hopes that the centre-back, who has trained with his parent club this week, will be back with the Robins when a Villa XI arrive in SN1 on Saturday.

He told the Advertiser: “He’s been back at Southampton and hopefully he’ll be back for the weekend. The more games he plays with us the better he’ll be. Hopefully we can get the paperwork done and get that over the line.”

Meanwhile, Swindon continue to actively pursue Turnbull’s Saints teammate Jack Stephens, with a loan agreement still possible.

“I spoke to Jack last weekend at the friendly. He came in the office to see me. He made no secret of the fact he really enjoyed his time here. He spoke to Jordan about it and gave the club a glowing reference. Jordan was desperate to come,” he said.

“If there’s a chance Jack can play in Southampton’s first team, he’s going to play in their team, isn’t he? If he’s not going to play and he’s going to go on loan I think he’s only going to want to come here.

“The only indication I got (from Southampton manager Ronald Koeman) was that he really likes him. Whether or not he feels he’s ready for the first team yet, I don’t know.”

On Wednesday, Southampton completed the signing of Ryan Bertrand on loan from Chelsea, while they are continuing their pursuit of Villa defender Ron Vlaar - signings which Cooper feels might accelerate the arrival of Stephens in Swindon.

The Town boss said: “I don’t think it will hinder it. I think it will help and hopefully they sign 10 defenders today and let Jack come and play at the weekend or in the early part of next week come train with us. Everybody knows we want Jack, I think he wants to come and play, and hopefully we’ll get that one over the line.”

Meanwhile, Cooper said there was no new update on Brad Smith, the Liverpool left-back wanted by Town.

well it¨s in the hands of the Gods would be super if STFC can get both players.Any rumours on a Striker????? no doubt something may happen over the next several days.
Well paid for flights/tickets for matches, now to arrange B/b for my 5 visits.(will not get much change out of 3,000GBP still did not make many last season due to illness. will be nice to see my old pals from the Picaddily days.So best of luck to the Town and fans I´m sure you will support this young team.Makes me think back to the 60´s

How long can loan deals possibly take to get done? If we already had the Liverpool link and had Turnbull on our radar then surely you get the deal ready to go before the window and finalise it on July 1st, not August 1st!

Is there no more news on the striker?, I think that this is the more pressing concern as goals are what win games, Smith and Williams dont seem nasty enough to get that crucial winner and like it or not we will really miss having Ranger up top.

The fans will have to really do their bit this year so if you're reading this get yourself a season ticket, get one for Villa XI too and scream your lungs out in the stands at the CG.

Why on earth would the loaning club send out their players before pre season has even started for them . I agree on the striker front we need another 1 at least

Now get an older pro, with the knowledge and experience of the lower leagues to guide and play along side this lad.

That's dedication - fair play to you, many of us have left the town but the football bug never leaves :-) Hopefully your effort will be rewarded with some good displays.

Wouldn't seem likely, unless it's a very low key behind closed doors affair. My reckoning is if there's no movement by tomorrow we'll be looking at a league game with a couple of new loan players on the bench. Definitely need a striker, if only for cover - if Smith or Williams gets injured we've got no senior player as back up.

Why not take a chance on a young striker from a lower league, sammy Jordan for example, worked with Charlie Austin and wouldn't cost anything really

Speaking of young players (and as the adver's a bit behind), congratulations to the town juniors at the milk cup who beat Everton 3-1 in the salver final this morning. That'll be the only silverware we'll be having this season! All joking aside, well done to all involved, good to see there're some potentially good prospects for the future.

I've always maintained that Turnball and Stephens would be the 'dream team' in defence. If MC & LP pull this one off we are likely to have the best one or two defences in the league - with our midfield already strong we only need Willo and/or Barker to shift up a gear and we will be there or thereabouts for the play-offs. An additional striker and the 2nd Smith would be a bonus but I feel that with a solid defensive pairing we could afford for either of Luongo or Kasim to play more forward just behind the front two. I really feel this would suit the players and give our front two more to feed off. As before, still incredibly pumped up for the season ahead. 100% behind MC and LP on how they have handled business this year, especially with all the time lost owing to the court case. Great shakes guys.
