Swindon Town v Brighton & Hove Albion

Swindon host Brighton in the second round of the League Cup. Town have only met Brighton twice before in the Cup competition. First time was in 1994. Swindon were in the Division One and Brighton were in Division Two. The tie was played at Brighton’s Goldstone Ground in Nov 94. Town, dominant from the start,  took the lead mid way through the first half with Andy Thompson scoring his only goal in the red shirt of Swindon. But a re-organised Brighton managed to get the equaliser mid-way through the second period to take the tie to a replay.

Back at the Country Ground, Town were rampant. Two up before half time with goals from Keith Scott and Jan-Age Fjortoft inside the first 8 minutes got the Town off to a flying start. In the second half Scott grabbed his second and Swindon’s third of the game for a comfortable 3 nil lead. Brighton pulled a goal back in the 67th minute only for Fjortoft to restore the three goal cushion 9 minutes later. The Town finished the match 4-1 winners and marched on to the next round.

The next encounter was not that long ago. It was the opening game of the 2012/13 season, first round of the League Cup. The first half ended 0-0, but a well executed training ground free kick, poked in by Paul Benson and a brace from Brighton old boy Alan Navarro saw the Town triumph 3-0 and go onto a memorable Cup run.
