Symonds demands focus for Peterborough trip
DEFENCEMAN Alex Symonds has warned Swindon Wildcats not to ‘lose focus’ when they travel to lowly Peterborough tomorrow night.
The Phantoms might be rock-bottom of the EPL but they have beaten both Basingstoke and Sheffield in their last three games.
And Symonds, 25, feels that Swindon must string together three strong periods at Planet Ice, something they failed to do in back-to-back defeats to Milton Keynes last weekend.
“Peterborough are struggling at the moment and we need to take advantage of that. It’s only one game this weekend so we should be able to fully concentrate on it,” he said.
“We need to come out and play strong road hockey. They are really good in their own rink and that’s something we need to look at, but I think we’re the better team.
“A lot of teams go to places like Peterborough and lose focus and end up losing.
“These away games are tough but they are the kind of games that win you championships, so everyone needs to make sure they give their best.
“I think we should probably have won both games last weekend but we didn’t really do too much talking afterwards. Guys know what they need to do to win.
“Guys know when they are playing bad and we are all professionals, we all needed to go home and have a good think about it before coming back.”
Two of Swindon’s three visits to Peterborough last season resulted in thrilling encounters, with one of those matches going to overtime after the Phantoms equalised at 59.59.
Symonds also struggled at Peterborough with former club Basingstoke in 2012/13, admitting the Cambridgeshire side were a tough proposition in their own building.
“Last year (Basingstoke) struggled there because guys don’t like showing up at a rink where it’s cold, the showers are freezing and the ice isn’t so good,” said Symonds.
“Peterborough came out flying and you don’t expect it, but they are very good at that and play to their strengths.”
