SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Milestone for Bevan as Ciren draw with struggler Fleet

Swindon Advertiser: Jody Bevan Jody Bevan

VETERAN striker Jody Bevan scored his 250th Southern League goal as Cirencester drew 2-2 against lowly Fleet in Southern League Division One South & West.

It could have been even better for the Centurions as in-form striker Lee Smith skied a penalty in stoppage time.

Ellis Dunton nodded the hosts in front in the seventh minute from Sean Wood's corner, only for the visitors to level in the second period when Pat Cox converted after Rob Carr's effort had rebounded off the post.

A crisp half-volley from Jordan Carter in the 55th minute gave Fleet a shock lead, but substitute Bevan lashed Steve Davies' cross in off the bar to level matters.

Smith later fluffed his lines from the spot and Ciren have now fallen three points behind table-toppers Merthyr in the standings.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Premier, Chippenham boss Mark Collier was delighted with the character shown by his players as they battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against St Albans.

The play-off chasing Saints took the lead at Hardenhuish Park through prolific striker John Frendo with 13 minutes remaining, but substitute Corey King tapped home the equaliser in the 89th minute.

And Collier said: “It was a game we certainly didn't deserve to lose. I thought the application and desire of the players was outstanding and to go 1-0 down against a team that are 20-odd points above us was a bit of a kick in the teeth.

“But we showed some great character to come back and fully deserved the draw. We're quite chuffed with what's gone on because it's easy to feel sorry for yourself when you're 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go.

“They're a little bit disappointed we didn't get more. Little incidents don't go your way sometimes and perhaps that made the difference.”
