MANAGER Pete Milhench felt Supermarine Sports Club were fortunate to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw at Devizes reserves in the Wiltshire League Premier Division.

Devizes took the lead in the opening minutes but the league leaders levelled just before half-time when Dave Rendle was pushed over in the box and Kieran Jennings converted the resulting penalty.

The visitors might have nicked all three points in the final 10 minutes of the second period but Dean Hughes could only direct his effort against the crossbar.

Sports boss Pete Milhench said: “We haven’t had a game since December 7 and they have got a good squad out there as they are the reserves to a Western League side.

“The whole game we only had two shots on goal so we didn’t deserve the win, but we did deserve a point.”

In the only match played elsewhere in the division, Jamie Sheppard and Ant Packer both hit doubles and Billy Sly was also on the scoresheet in Southbrook’s 5-1 thrashing of hosts Wilts Calne Town.

Southbrook boss Albert Dearing was delighted with victory, which meant his team moved to within five points of Supermarine with a game in hand.

Dearing said: “We knew fitness was going to be an issue after not having a game for a few weeks, so we knew we had to get going early.

“We went 3-0 up before they pulled one back and then it was 4-1 at half-time, and we coasted through the second half.

“We could have had more goals in the second half but in the end we were quite happy with the result.

“it was nice to get back in the groove after losing our last game to Vale of Pewsey.”

The only fixture in Division 1 saw Wroughton reserves storm to a 9-2 victory over rock-bottom Blunsdon.

The result allowed Wroughton to close the gap on third-placed Wootton Bassett Dev to six points.

Bassett Dev were without a game in the league at the weekend as they had a Junior KO Cup quarter-final fixture at Malmesbury reserves, which they lost 5-2.

Lewis Petrie was twice on the scoresheet for Bassett which included a penalty, but they could not progress to the last four.

“We made mistakes at the back and got punished, although to be fair Malmesbury played very well,” said boss Dave Terry.

“It was a bad day at the office for us as we just didn’t play very well. But sometimes you learn more in defeat than you do from winning all the time so we have to be positive.”
