RETURNING Robins rider Nicolai Klindt is confident he can put two points on his bargain 4.24 average when he returns for the new season.

The Dane won the Blunsdon club’s rider of the year award for being a rare shining light in what proved to be a disastrous 2011 season, but since then has slipped down the averages due to a combination of a loss of form and injury problems.

After spells with King’s Lynn and Peterborough were cut short last season Klindt is now back and raring to go and believes he is capable of making significant improvements over the course of the 2014 campaign.

“I said the same last year and it didn’t happen for me but I should really increase my average by two points this season,” he said.

“Now I’m down at 4.24 so I should increase it by two at least but if I can have a consistent season I will be really happy.

“I would rather be scoring seven or eight points a meeting rather than 10 one week then three the next and I need to be more consistent.

“I don’t really set goals but I should be able to put two points on for sure, I would have liked to have thought I would be a 6.50 average rider by now.”

Despite moving to Blunsdon on what appears to be a bargain average, the Robins were the only Elite League team to express any interest in Klindt which came as a bit of a surprise to the rider.

“I didn’t really have any other offers from any Elite League clubs which was a massive surprise to myself really because I know what I’m capable of,” he said.

“I know I can increase my average loads next season at Swindon and I thought I would get more offers than I did.

“I actually made a deal with a Premier League club but when Swindon came along I had to say no and turn them down at the last minute. I wasn’t happy to do that because I don’t like to break a deal but I have to do what’s best for me.”

Although most of the Elite League clubs are now complete, Klindt is unsure which sides are the strongest due to the unknown quantities at reserve following the National League riders draft.

“With this new rule with the juniors it’s pretty hard to tell who has come out good because a few of them are unknown riders,” he said.

“It’s hard to know which teams have been given the best riders but Josh (Bates) has a lot of talent and Steve (Worrall) came on really well at the end of last season.

“Pete (Kildemand) and Troy (Batchelor) are our top men and they should deliver so it’s going to be a really good season.”
