Smith plays it down despite a near-perfect debut

Swindon Advertiser: Michael Smith Michael Smith

GIVEN he’d just scored two goals on debut to help his new side to three crucial League One points, Michael Smith cut a very modest figure post-match on Saturday.

The striker, signed from Charlton for an initial £100,000, opened the scoring against Shrewsbury Town with a tidy finish on the half-hour and rounded off the win with a clinical shot underneath the body of visiting keeper Chris Weale in stoppage time as Swindon Town claimed a fortunate 3-1 victory.

Instead of boasting about what was pretty much the perfect debut performance in front of the press, however, Smith said he was “relieved to have got the debut out of the way”.

“I think the weather played a massive part in it but I was just glad to get my debut out the way and score two goals.

“That was horrible to play in, it was bad,” he said.

“I’m so relieved to get one on my debut, let alone two. As a striker it’s always nice.

“Every striker’s got a selfish streak and it’s always nice to get off the mark.

“The lads got three points as well and it’s good to play a part in that as well.”

Smith felt that the scoreline flattered Town, who were well below their fluent best and owed the win to a superb performance by goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and a super sub cameo from enigmatic frontman Nile Ranger.

“I think 3-1 flattered us in a way, I think a few of the boys would have taken 1-1 but Nile’s come off the bench and scored one and made one himself. He’s changed the game when he’s come on,” said Smith.

“The manager came in at the end and said today wasn’t as good as he knows we can play but Tuesday will be a big test and everyone is looking forward to it.

“I’ve got the debut and the first goal out of the way and now I can kick on from there.”

Smith looked useful and gives us height and physical presence but he is not a thoroughbred like Nile - the more I see him play the more I rate him. I wish he could steady himself in his private life because on the pitch he is a model professional. Let's hope Smith's debut goals give him the confidence to score a lot more. If the two of them can form a strike partnership then it could be very good for us indeed.

I've got a positive feeling about Walsall, I reckon we can get at least a draw there despite their recent form and the way they ran rings round us at the County Ground. COYMR

Walsall walked all over us when they played us at home and we were lucky it was only 3-1 we lost.
Tomorrow night is revenge time and with the majority of our players not getting out of 1st gear saturday they need to be in overdrive tomorrow night if they seriously want to get a chance of being in the play offs because on current form we are no where near good enough but if they get their heads together the whole squad and reallt get theirselves up for tomorrow and shock us all then we will be within touching distance of the play off teams as they are starting to pull away.
We need 100% commitment from all the players tomorrow no lethargic performances and not our usual away pathetic performances.
Come on Town you can do it at home and theres absolutley no reason why you can do it away either as 90% of the problem is in the head and adapting to a different environment.
As someone who played conference football it did for some reason effect you playing away from home but not as bad as our side have been this season.
So shock us all and get a result three points will be fantastic and a point will be very good as they are on a fantastic run and it would be good to stop it otherwise the gap increases between us and the top 6.
