Mason and McEveley to be assessed

Swindon Advertiser: Mark Cooper Mark Cooper

RYAN Mason and Jay McEveley will be assessed by Swindon Town’s medical staff today as they try to ascertain the extent of injuries picked up by the pair during Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town.

Mason was forced off with a muscle spasm in his side after 17 minutes of the clash at the County Ground, while McEveley had to be substituted within two minutes of the start of the second half after his knee locked.

Both players have been plagued by injuries this term, with Mason having already spent time on the sidelines with calf and ankle problems and McEveley having recovered from knee surgery 15 months ago.

“Ryan Mason made a run into the box and was brought down and he got a kick on his muscle in his side, which went into spasm. He couldn’t continue,” said Swindon manager Mark Cooper.

“Jay McEveley was a doubt – he had a fitness test this morning with a different injury, which is why we signed Jamie Reckord this morning at about quarter to 12.

“I know people have been saying we need a defender and we’ve brought one in.

“Jay’s knee locked and was in a bad state and he had to come off.”

Cooper was pleased with the performance of Reckord, signed on an emergency 93-day loan from Wolves over the weekend.

Reckord produced a composed display for his new side despite hardly knowing any of his new teammates’ names, and Cooper said: “He would have played if Jay hadn’t have passed the fitness test.

“He’s another one that’s been on our list.

“He fits our credentials of what we’re after.

“He’s another young one, he’s a good footballer, he can play left centre-back or he can play left-back and he’s good with the football. I thought he did quite well when he came on. He’s played the part in us getting three points. As lucky as we were, we still got three points.”
