TOWN boss Mark Cooper believes coming up against League One’s top goalscorer will be the perfect way for his young defenders to show they have learned from Saturday’s errors.

In the draw with Colchester United, Town’s defence struggled to deal with the visitors’ predatory forwards playing on their shoulder.

In Chesterfield’s Eoin Doyle, they will be facing off with the man who is currently the best in the division at exactly the same thing.

The Irishman currently leads the scoring charts for League One and will be looking to prey on Town’s young defence.

Cooper refused to criticise his inexperienced back line, but with Nathan Thompson set to return he has described the challenge of dealing with Doyle as a “perfect opportunity” for Town to show they have learned from their mistakes.

“With Nathan coming back in and giving us that little bit of depth when that long ball comes, he’s expecting that and sweeping behind,” said Cooper “For me, that makes it more solid straight away. We’re playing with centre-halves and we have a holding midfield player. On the whole, apart from the last two games, we’ve looked pretty solid.”

On dealing with Doyle himself, Cooper said: “You show them bit of how he plays and then on the night it’s up to them. They have to get around him and be aware that when the ball is wide and it’s going be crossed in, that somebody is really tight to him.”
