SWINDON ended their run of three games without a win to move to third in League One as they claimed a 3-0 win away to Chesterfield.

The home side took the game to Swindon for large parts of the game but two first half strikes from Yaser Kasim and Nathan Byrne gave Swindon a first half lead.

Substitute Andy Williams extended the visiting sides lead mid-way through the second half, after Jon Obika had seen an effort come off the post.

Swindon made two changes to the team that drew 2-2 with Colchester United on Saturday.

Skipper Nathan Thompson returned to the side after serving a two match suspension and Obika replaced Andy Williams up front.

Chesterfield had made the better start and peppered Swindon’s goal in the opening period but failed to draw Foderingham into a meaningful save.

It was Obika who was left with his head in his hands after 15 minutes.

After being played in between the defence he rounded Chesterfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee but could not get his foot around the ball with the goal gaping and put it wide.

Chesterfield continued to push with Dan Gardner causing Jack Stephens problems down the left and Foderingham got down well to his right to get a strong right hand to a shot from Samy Morsy and keep Town level.

The break-through came against the run of play when Byrne was brought down by captain, Ian Evatt, as he was charging forward.

Kasim stepped up for the free-kick from at least 25-yards out and it looked to have taken a nick off the wall as it wrong-footed Lee.

Swindon doubled their lead just four minutes later when some excellence from Byrne again caused problems in the Chesterfield ranks.

He making his way into the box, he saw first attempt to cross the ball with his right foot blocked.

Not giving up, he latched onto the loose ball and stepped inside before letting fire with his left leaving Lee with no chance in goal.

Michael Smith had a good chance in the 58th minute when Obika latched on to a loose pass in the centre of the field.

He charged forward and played in a lovely ball behind the defence to Smith but his shot was well stopped by the foot of Lee and Obika couldn’t get a shot away on the follow up.

Obika had another chance to get his first goal since netting against Newport away but saw his effort in the 66th minute come back off the post.

A lovely ball is played to the back post by Byrne and with Obika unmarked at the back post he nods the ball against the up right.

Despite coming under a lot of pressure from Chesterfield, who were looking for a way back into the game, Swindon again showed their clinical side when Williams scored in the 70th minute.

Byrne used his pace again to break away and played a ball through to Williams.

Williams with one of his first touches replacing Obika saw his first effort blocked but the ball fell nicely and he tapped home into an empty net.
