A FORD Escort RS Turbo has set a new world record price as part of a classic car auction that included Ferraris, Porsches and a Jaguar XJ220 once owned by the Brunei royal family.

The superb-condition 1985 Escort RS Turbo Series 1 sold for £60,188, a new best for the model.

Silverstone Auctions, which hosted the two-day sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham, says it saw £4.4m in sales over the duration of the event, where 80% of the 95 lots were sold.

Fast Fords were popular, with a ‘time warp’ Sierra Cosworth RS500 selling for £90,000. Buyers were drawn in by its mere 13,000-mile odometer reading.

Meanwhile, Ferraris were also highly sought after. The hammer fell on a 1993 Ferrari 512 TR for a new UK auction record total price of £185,625. A 1999 F355 F1, the last of the line of highly desirable 355 models, sold for £103,500.

The 1991 Jaguar XJ220, formerly owned by Brunei royalty, sold for a premium-inclusive £315,000, while a stunning Porsche 356A T1 Cabriolet from 1956 was bought for £196,875.

Managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic weekend here at the UK’s biggest classic car show.

"The atmosphere at the sale was electric and I’m delighted we’ve been able to secure such great prices on behalf of our vendors, as well as breaking a few records along the way.

“The key sign of a successful auction is when you have both happy sellers and happy buyers and this time we have both.”
