SPOTTY cars and Pudsey bear ears were seen at the County Ground ahead of a national charity event next month

Driving instructors from across the town united ahead of the Big Learner Relay in aid of Children In Need.

The relay features driving instructors and pupils across the country relaying a top box from one driving lesson to another.

In a two week, 2,800 mile journey, each instructor will come up with creative ways to raise funds. People can sponsor a spot and donate money to sign a coloured spot and stick it on an instructor’s car.

Although the relay won’t be speeding through Swindon this year, there are plans for a mini relay which will take in primary schools and the Magic Roundabout.

And a convoy of multi-coloured spotted cars along with instructors wearing Pudsey ears were in the County Ground carpark this week to promote the event.

Driving instructor Jo Silvester said she couldn’t wait to get on the road for the relay.

“It’s really exciting, knowing that we are doing something that will raise so much for charity. It’s a fun event that brings not only the driving instructor community together, but the whole town,” she said.

Jo said the nine customised cars and trailer had some unusual reactions from passers-by.

“The spotted cars definitely make an impression on people, it makes them smile,” she said.

“There’s so many of the cars this year so we definitely think we can smash the money raised last year and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

Last year an impressive £1,600 was raised in Swindon with nearly £100,000 donated overall nationally.

The relay will run on November 6 and 7 with Children in Need mascot Pudsey Bear dropping into three town primary schools -, St Mary’s Catholic, Moredon and Drove.

“It’s so important for children to learn about charity and what Children in Need does. This is the perfect chance to show them that charity begins at home, and of course they love seeing Pudsey in the classrooms” said Jo.
