Celebrating new link between schools

A NEW link tunnel and updated canteen facilities opened At Ferndale School last week, thanks to proposals from pupils on a school council.

Youngsters from the school council welcomed the mayor and mayoress of Swindon, Rex Barnett and his wife Sandra, to the opening ceremony on Friday.

“We met their little council made up of 10 and 11-year-olds and cut the ribbon,’’ said Mr Barnett.

The pupils on the council put forward their ideas and voted on them.

Mr Barentt said: “The infant and junior schools have now come together as one, and in between the two units the children were out in the rain. Builder Beards has built The Tunnel, as the children call it, so they are in the dry.’’ It was a walk down memory lane for Sandra as she is a former pupil of the school and found her old classroom.

She said: “It was lovely going back, and they still have the same tiles as I remember from 60 years ago.

“The children gave me a little posy of flowers that they had made themselves. They were so sweet and well behaved.”

The mayor was presented with £100 from the school for his charities and the VIPs were treated to lunch in the new kitchen.

The mayor has written to the school council asking them to join him for tea and lemonade at the his parlour in the Civic Offices, where they will get a chance to wear the mayoral robes and chain and learn about the town’s crest.
